A study published in the&nbsp;<em>American Journal of Lifestyle Medicine<\/em>&nbsp;looked at the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4341978\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">relationship between sleep and exercise<\/a>&nbsp;and found that it was bi-directional. Not only does exercise affect sleep, but sleep impacts exercise\u2014and a bad night&#8217;s snooze negatively affects daytime activity levels and muscle function.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-6-best-sleep-tips-for-runners\">6 best sleep tips for runners<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Whether running is a new hobby for you or it&#8217;s something you&#8217;ve been doing for years, the following sleep tips can help you maximize your time spent pounding the pavement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-1-prioritize-deep-sleep\">1. Prioritize deep sleep<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Getting more&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.saatva.com\/blog\/what-is-deep-sleep-and-do-you-need-deep-sleep\/\">deep sleep<\/a>, also known as slow-wave sleep, is the&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.runnersworld.com\/health-injuries\/a31020839\/runners-slow-wave-sleep\/\">key to faster runs<\/a>, according to a recent article in&nbsp;<em>Runner&#8217;s World<\/em>. Deep sleep is the most restorative stage of sleep\u2014it&#8217;s when tissue repair happens, and it allows your body (and mind) to recover from the stresses of the day so you wake up feeling refreshed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Carissa Alinat, PhD, hormone therapy specialist, tells&nbsp;<em>Runner&#8217;s World<\/em>&nbsp;that human growth hormone (HGH), which plays a role in your body&#8217;s ability to repair muscles, is released during deep sleep. Less deep sleep is linked to lower HGH levels and, in turn, worse athletic performance, she says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Deep sleep should account for about 25% of your total sleep time\u2014so roughly two and a half hours, says Michael Breus, PhD, clinical psychologist and sleep specialist. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2-optimize-your-bedroom\">2. Optimize your bedroom<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You can prime yourself for sleep\u2014and a successful run the next day\u2014with the right bedroom setup. That starts with your mattress: If you can&#8217;t get comfy in bed, you won&#8217;t be able to sleep well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Look for a mattress that has added lumbar support to protect your back and cooling features so you don&#8217;t wake up sweating in the middle of the night.
