I&#8217;ve also tapped other travelers and sleep experts to share the hacks they swear by for how to sleep on an airplane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How to sleep on an airplane<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>1. Cancel out the noise<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>I can&#8217;t fly without my noise-canceling headphones. Whether it&#8217;s a crying baby behind me, frequent flight announcements, or just a noisy, packed flight, drowning out excess sound always helps me get to sleep faster and stay asleep longer. Wear a special eye mask<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Overhead lights frequently turn on and off throughout a flight. So, an <span class=\"tooltip\" data-id=\"29822\">eye mask<\/span> is key for getting some shut-eye. Plan your sleep<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I find I lose track of time on flights, so I set a plan for when I will sleep to ensure I don\u2019t get engrossed in work or entertainment and miss my opportunity for the best rest period,&#8221; says Amanda Al-Masri, global VP, head of wellness at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hilton.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hilton Hotels<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>4. Prop up a pillow<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.saatva.com\/blog\/best-travel-pillow-for-you\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Neck pillows<\/a>&nbsp;have never worked for me. Instead, I use the airline&#8217;s pillow and stick it in the small of my back. This keeps my lower back supported while trying to sleep in a seated position. If you aren&#8217;t given a pillow, use a blanket or your jacket.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. Set an alarm<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;When I get on the plane, I set my phone clock to whatever time it is at my final destination\u2014and adjust my mindset and sleep schedule accordingly,&#8221; says Jacob Teitelbaum, MD, author of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Fatigued-Fantastic-Jacob-Teitelbaum-M-D\/dp\/1583332898\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>From Fatigued to Fantastic<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>6. Bring a favorite item<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Comfort items are among the best tools for sleeping on an airplane. &#8220;I have a compact travel blanket that I take on every flight,&#8221;&nbsp;says Virginia Dawson, MD at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.headspace.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Headspace<\/a>.&nbsp;&#8220;Even if I don\u2019t plan to sleep, I find that it helps me create a calm environment in my seat.&#8221; &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">7. Dress comfortably&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>We&#8217;re not necessarily saying wear your pajamas to the airport, but something loose-fitting is key. &#8220;There are so many wonderful options for soft, wrinkle-free, non-binding clothing that travel well and look put together before and after your flight,&#8221; says Al-Masri. &#8220;For longer trips, I always pack a warm layer that can fill in as a pillow or blanket if those haven\u2019t been provided.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>8. Lower your body temperature&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.saatva.com\/blog\/temperature-and-sleep\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">cold space<\/a>&nbsp;is optimal for sleep. If the plane is too warm, start shedding some layers. &#8220;Your body\u2019s temp needs to drop one to two degrees to help fall asleep and stay asleep,&#8221; advises Dawson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>9. Use a relaxing scent<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.saatva.com\/blog\/how-lavender-improves-sleep-quality\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Lavender<\/a>&nbsp;always relaxes me. So, I tend to spray my wrists, eye mask, or pillow with lavender essential oil before trying to fall asleep. Don&#8217;t spray too much as a heavy scent can disturb others around you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">10. Play something calming<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Dawson recommends using brown noise, similar to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.saatva.com\/blog\/does-white-noise-help-you-sleep\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">white noise<\/a>&nbsp;but with a deeper tone. Stay hydrated<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Avoid&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.saatva.com\/blog\/does-alcohol-help-sleep\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">alcohol<\/a>&nbsp;and salty food before and on your flights. Alcohol not only makes you sleep worse but also makes you wake up frequently. This will also keep you thirsty and make it harder for you to fall asleep. And never say no to water on your flight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">12.
