This goes double during the first few days, as you readjust to your new routine. And it\u2019s not just a post-sunset Iftar feast on the menu:&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.saatva.com\/tips-for-treating-insomnia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">insomnia<\/a>&nbsp;is often a Ramadan staple too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you feel that you don\u2019t sleep as well during Ramadan, it\u2019s not just your imagination. &#8220;Eating close to bedtime can, unfortunately, be disruptive to sleep,&#8221; says Monique May, MD, board-certified family physician in Charlotte, N.C., author of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/MealMasters-Simple-Guide-Modern-Day-Planning-ebook\/dp\/B083ZMMW4R\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Meal Masters: Your Simple Guide to Modern-Day Meal Planning<\/em><\/a>, and medical director at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/aeroflowinc.com\/sleep-apnea\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Aeroflow Sleep<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-fasting-during-ramadan-impacts-sleep\">How fasting during Ramadan impacts sleep<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Research varies, but Sid Khurana, MD, psychiatrist and medical director of outpatient services at&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/nevadamentalhealth.com\/\">Nevada Mental Health<\/a>, notes that recent data suggests daytime fasting might increase a wakefulness neuropeptide while leading to less&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.saatva.com\/blog\/what-is-deep-sleep-and-do-you-need-deep-sleep\/\">deep sleep<\/a>&nbsp;at night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Diurnal fasting\u2014fasting during the day, as in Ramadan\u2014can impact sleep during night and day,&#8221; confirms Khurana.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Several factors are at play, including the fact that the window between post-sunset Iftar and pre-dawn Suhoor is short, many run a sleep deficit during Ramadan, and getting quality sleep on a full stomach can be difficult.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One study in the&nbsp;<em>Journal of Research in Medical Sciences<\/em>&nbsp;found that people who fasted during Ramadan had&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3724373\/\">later bedtimes and wake times<\/a>&nbsp;than those not fasting. In another study in the&nbsp;<em>Saudi Medical Journal<\/em>, participants reported overall&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/15900372\/\">diminished sleep quality<\/a>&nbsp;while fasting during Ramadan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Fasting can have both positive and negative impacts on sleep based on research findings,&#8221; adds Jonathan Baktari, MD, CEO of&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.e7health.com\/\">e7 Health<\/a>. &#8220;On one hand, fasting can reduce insulin levels and increase&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.saatva.com\/blog\/everything-you-need-to-know-about-melatonin\/\">melatonin<\/a>&nbsp;levels which should aid in an easier and better sleep pattern. However, fasting can sometimes elevate cortisol levels which can disrupt sleep patterns.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Related:&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.saatva.com\/blog\/intermittent-fasting-and-sleep\/\">Can intermittent fasting help you sleep?<\/a>&nbsp;<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-to-get-enough-sleep-during-ramadan\">How to get enough sleep during Ramadan<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Whether fasting for Ramadan or during the rest of the year, here are a few key tips for getting better sleep. You might not feel like a million bucks, but at least the sleep you&nbsp;<em>do<\/em>&nbsp;get will be of higher quality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-allow-time-for-digestion\">Allow time for digestion<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Baktari recommends waiting two hours after eating to go to bed. &#8220;This is an overall strategy to improve sleep,&#8221; he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As Khurana notes, though, there is a delicate balance. &#8220;If the meal is consumed too late in the night, and then an attempt is made to stay up for a couple of hours, while this might be better for digestion, there might be less total sleep,\u201d he says. Ideally, give yourself at least a little time to digest before sleeping. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-take-a-nap\">Take a nap<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Your sleep window could be extremely short during Ramadan, especially depending on where you live. If you find yourself exhausted every morning when waking for Suhoor and stay awake after Iftar to digest a little, take a&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.saatva.com\/blog\/how-long-should-i-nap\/\">power nap<\/a>&nbsp;in the afternoon if possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Amna Husain, MD, board-certified pediatrician, lactation consultant, and founder of&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/puredirectpediatrics.com\/\">Pure Direct Pediatrics<\/a>, endorses the nap route. \u201cIt\u2019s definitely possible to get by on a four-hour chunk with a longer nap during the day while fasting,\u201d Husain says. \u201cI\u2019ve certainly done it as a resident while fasting. It\u2019s not pleasant, but certainly doable!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-sleep-with-your-head-elevated\">Sleep with your head elevated<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you can&#8217;t wait two hours after your meal to digest\u2014difficult when you only have a few hours before Suhoor!\u2014try to avoid&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.saatva.com\/blog\/dealing-with-acid-reflux-at-night\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">acid reflux<\/a>&nbsp;and heartburn through sleep positioning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Sleeping on your left side may help with heartburn, but more important is elevating your head above the level of your chest,&#8221; May advises. &#8220;This helps gravity keep things flowing in a downward direction and not backward, which can cause reflux of stomach contents and acid.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-eat-slowly\">Eat slowly<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You&#8217;ll be starving after fasting all day, so what&#8217;re a few more minutes? &#8220;If you know you will be eating a big meal, try eating slowly,&#8221; says Rachel Eva Dew, doctor of natural medicine and co-founder and CEO of&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/modiht.com\/\">ModiHealth<\/a>. &#8220;This will help your body&#8217;s digestion.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Your body spends valuable time working on digesting,\u201d she adds. \u201cThis can leave you exhausted the next day.\u201d Eating slowly equals better digestion equals (hopefully!) better sleep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-skip-the-huge-portions\">Skip the huge portions<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The biggest offender that could keep you tossing and turning? Huge portions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFollowing a fast, many of us eat as if we\u2019re making up for the meals we missed\u2014but the mistake is consuming portions bigger than we actually needed for one meal,\u201d explains&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/bonnietaubdix.com\/\">Bonnie Taub-Dix<\/a>, RDN, author of&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Read-Before-You-Eat-Taking\/dp\/1979739722\"><em>Read It Before You Eat It: Taking You from Label to Table<\/em>.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That large meal is all but guaranteed to disrupt your sleep patterns. \u201cThis is especially taxing on your gastrointestinal system and could lead to a sleepless, uncomfortable night ahead,\u201d says Taub-Dix.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As for what to eat after abstaining from food all day? &#8220;To improve your sleep during fasting, eat lean proteins, fruits, vegetables, and complex carbs to give you a sustained source of energy and help you feel full longer,&#8221; says May. &#8220;Avoid sugary snacks and processed foods.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-stay-hydrated\">Stay hydrated<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>As you are not drinking throughout the day, it&#8217;s important to make sure you&#8217;re well-hydrated at night.&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.saatva.com\/blog\/benefits-of-drinking-water-for-sleep\/\">Lack of proper hydration<\/a>&nbsp;can lead to disturbed sleep, explains May. &#8220;Drinking an 8-ounce glass of water may help, or fasting for only 8-16 hours instead,&#8221; she says.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-massage-your-belly\">Massage your belly<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Dew recommends massaging your stomach clockwise to help your food digest. &#8220;Use the palm of your hand to gently massage your entire stomach in a clockwise direction, starting at the centerline of your upper abdomen, and moving the hand in a clockwise circle down, around, past your pubic bone, and ending back at the same place you started,&#8221; she says. &#8220;Doing this for 2-3 minutes helps with digestion.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-faqs\">FAQs<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-does-ramadan-affect-sleep\">Does Ramadan affect sleep?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Studies show fasting during Ramadan can affect sleep.
