In theory, its cool nighttime temperatures and earlier darkness should support your sleep. But in reality, shrinking daylight hours and the hormonal changes it causes in your body can affect both your sleep&nbsp;<em>and<\/em>&nbsp;waking hours. It can also affect your mood and energy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are the problems that can affect your sleeping during the fall and advice for dealing with them so you can sleep soundly all season long.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-less-daylight\">Less daylight<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The shorter daylight time in the fall, especially after the&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.saatva.com\/blog\/sleep-well-daylight-saving-time-ends\/\">end of Daylight Saving Time<\/a>&nbsp;(DST), means your body starts to prepare you for sleep earlier than usual.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Given that light comes later and later every day, this means we tend to sleep longer and heavier, as it takes our melatonin levels longer to drop each night,&#8221;&nbsp;says family practice physician&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/testprepinsight.com\/experts\/\">Peter Bailey<\/a>, MD.&nbsp;&#8220;Assuming you get up at the same time every day for work or school, this can have the effect of making us feel sleepy or groggy each morning.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The shifts in our circadian rhythm can \u201cput us out of balance during the cold months,\u201d says psychologist Shagoon Maurya, founder of&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/ursafespace.com\/\">ursafespace.com<\/a>. The shorter days and longer nights can create a disconnect between our body\u2019s earlier production of melatonin and our actual sleep and wake times.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis misalignment is the cause of the depression, overeating, sluggishness, and other symptoms many people experience every winter,\u201d says Maurya.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One thing you can do to prevent the end of DST from wrecking your sleep? Try taking a short nap (30 minutes or less) pre- and post-time change to restore lost sleep. Maintaining your regular exercise routine and a healthy diet can also go a long way toward improving your sleep quality and keeping your sleep cycle on track.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-fatigue-and-depression\">Fatigue and depression<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Less sunlight means your body produces less Vitamin D. Besides keeping your bones and muscles strong, Vitamin D also affects the production of serotonin, the \u201chappy hormone.\u201d Lowered serotonin can contribute to feeling tired and depressed\u2014symptoms that may mean you have&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.saatva.com\/blog\/seasonal-affective-disorder-sleep\/\">Seasonal Affective Disorder<\/a>&nbsp;(SAD).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>SAD is a type of depression brought on by a lack of sunlight. Although it&#8217;s typically associated with winter, SAD&#8217;s symptoms can begin in the fall. (SAD can also occur in the summer, although less frequently.)&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nimh.nih.gov\/health\/topics\/seasonal-affective-disorder\/index.shtml\">Symptoms of SAD<\/a>&nbsp;include low energy, hypersomnia (excessive daytime sleepiness or excessive time spent sleeping), increased appetite, and social withdrawal (you feel like \u201chibernating&#8221;).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur mental health is strongly tied to the quality of sleep we get at night,\u201d says Bailey, \u201cand suffering from SAD can have significant negative effects on our mental outlook.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He points out that light therapy is one of the best ways to mitigate the effects of SAD. \u201cSimple&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/NorbSMILE-Advanced-Supplements-Circadian-Performance\/dp\/B07SPD3DJV\/\">$20 lights off Amazon<\/a>&nbsp;can provide a major boost to mental outlook,\u201d he says, \u201callowing for the release of melatonin and easing you into sleep.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Maurya also offers several other suggestions for dealing with SAD:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Exercise to counter the lethargy that comes with SAD.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Get as much sunshine as possible by keeping blinds open and going for a walk when the sun is out.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Stick to a schedule \u201cto expose yourself to sunlight at consistent and predictable times.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Socialize \u201cto stay proactive and feel supported during tougher times.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Consult a therapist \u201cif your case of SAD is severe and majorly hinders your daily life.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-hot-dry-indoor-air\">Hot, dry indoor air<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cColder temperatures outside can mean that we crank up our thermostats, which actually can reduce the amount of&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.saatva.com\/blog\/what-is-deep-sleep-and-do-you-need-deep-sleep\/\">deep sleep<\/a>&nbsp;we have,\u201d says therapist&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/www.drlaurencook.com\/\">Lauren Cook<\/a>, PsyD. \u201cSo even though it can feel chilly outside and we want to snuggle up with blankets,\u201d it\u2019s better to keep it cool inside, she says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The National Sleep Foundation notes that the&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.saatva.com\/blog\/temperature-and-sleep\/\">best temperature for sleep<\/a>&nbsp;falls between 60\u00b0 and 67\u00b0 Fahrenheit.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bailey explains that sleeping in a cool room lets our bodies maintain the cooler temperature they dip to as they prepare for sleep. \u201cThis facilitates maintenance of that cool body temperature and allows for deeper, more restorative sleep,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another benefit of embracing the cooler fall weather while you sleep?\u00a0\u201cCold temperatures also regenerate our mitochondria, or brown fat\u2014the powerhouse of each cell,&#8221; And of course, the great American autumn holiday known as Thanksgiving brings with it a cornucopia of opportunities to over-indulge in all the special foods prepared for the occasion.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although the poor Thanksgiving turkey gets blamed for causing the after-dinner sleepiness, fatigue, and brain fog, the fact is the urge to nap after a holiday feast is mostly because of our over-indulgence.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We essentially put ourselves into a&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.saatva.com\/blog\/what-is-food-coma-and-how-to-prevent-it\/\">food coma<\/a>\u2014an actual thing with&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/elifesciences.org\/articles\/19334\">scientific backing<\/a>, also known as postprandial somnolence.
