With spring\u2019s arrival comes increased warmth and sunshine and offers plenty of fun things to do outdoors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But whether you\u2019re aware of it or not, the change in seasons can actually bring on seasonal fatigue. In fact, the Spring Equinox has a funny way of throwing your sleep schedule completely out of whack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Most common spring sleep problems and how to treat them<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Daylight Saving Time<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>As Weiss notes,&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.saatva.com\/blog\/daylight-saving-time-sleep\/\">Daylight Saving Time<\/a>&nbsp;(DST) can cause sleep loss and circadian dysregulation. \u201cWe will face darker mornings, with later sunrises, which make it difficult to wake up in the morning,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then, in the evening, you\u2019ll feel more alert, making it difficult to fall asleep. Weiss views this spring&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.saatva.com\/blog\/tips-for-treating-insomnia\/\">insomnia<\/a>&nbsp;as a form of&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.saatva.com\/blog\/jet-lag-cures\/\">jet lag<\/a>&nbsp;that can be detrimental to overall health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPeople may experience mood swings, irritability, increased daytime sleepiness, increased risk of cardiovascular events such as heart attack and stroke, and higher risk of accidents,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, what should you do about it?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Weiss recommends sticking to a consistent sleep schedule and daytime routine. \u201cWake up and go to bed simultaneously every day, including on weekends,&#8221; she says. &#8220;Increasing exposure to light in the morning is also beneficial for staying alert during the day and sleeping better at night.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Weiss adds that people with insomnia may experience more difficulty adjusting to DST.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Changes in melatonin production<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Change of season fatigue, or \u201cspring fatigue,\u201d as Weiss calls it, is marked by difficulty falling asleep, which she says is a fairly common complaint during spring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Changes in the photoperiod, or the duration of daytime, can also disrupt&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.saatva.com\/blog\/everything-you-need-to-know-about-melatonin\/\">melatonin<\/a>&nbsp;production. This is also connected to DST\u2014and unfortunately, the increased fatigue can not only make people feel less than their best but can even cause an increase in car accidents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The approach to this is the same as what you would do following DST: adhere to a consistent sleep schedule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Allergies<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Since&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.saatva.com\/blog\/allergies-and-sleep\/\">allergies<\/a>&nbsp;peak during spring and are often accompanied by a stuffed nose and post-nasal drip that complicates breathing, your sleep quality can suffer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To decrease allergy symptoms and achieve better sleep, Weiss recommends proactively avoiding exposure to triggers (pollen, dust, etc.),&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.saatva.com\/blog\/benefits-of-drinking-water-for-sleep\/\">drinking more water<\/a>,&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.saatva.com\/blog\/benefits-of-sleeping-with-humidifier\/\">sleeping with a humidifier<\/a>, and using saline solution to rinse and clean your nose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Weiss adds that people with obstructive&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.saatva.com\/blog\/sleep-apnea-guide\/\">sleep apnea<\/a>&nbsp;may experience respiratory issues caused by allergies (and also colds), which can affect their use of CPAP.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have obstructive sleep apnea, seek advice from your healthcare provider, advises Weiss, especially if you\u2019re experiencing nosebleeds, ear pressure, an extremely sore throat, shortness of breath, or a runny nose with a change in mucus color
