There’s nothing more frustrating than buying a set of bed sheets just to find out they don’t fit your mattress<\/a>. Sheet size dimensions are one of the most important factors to consider when buying a new set of sheets. This guide to bed sheet sizes (which includes a handy chart) will make it easy for you to find the right sheet dimensions for your bed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bed sheet sizes chart<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A good rule of thumb is that the sheets you buy should be at least the same size as your mattress\u2014and in many cases (especially for flat sheets), wider and longer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We\u2019ve put together a chart of the most common sheet size dimensions offered at Saatva, from crib all the way to California king. Note that sheet dimensions often vary by retailer. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Crib sheet dimensions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Crib-size sheets are usually relatively thin and are always fitted sheets since it\u2019s not practical for a baby to sleep on flat sheets. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Twin sheet dimensions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Not counting the crib, a twin mattress<\/a> is the smallest mattress size that fits both adults and children. Once your child outgrows their crib<\/a>, their twin bed can easily serve them from toddlerhood to adulthood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The size of a twin mattress is 38 inches wide by 75 inches long. Saatva’s fitted twin sheets are 39 inches by 75 inches and our twin flat sheets are 72 inches by 110 inches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Twin XL mattresses are less common but are a perfect solution for taller teens and adults living on their own in tight spaces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These mattresses are the same width<\/a> as a twin mattress but are 5 inches longer and often used in college dorms. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Keep in mind that because of the difference in length, twin-size sheets won\u2019t fit twin XL mattresses\u2014so if your child has outgrown their twin mattress, they\u2019ve also outgrown their sheets. They’re perfect for an adult who wants more personal space\u2014but they can also sleep a couple, especially if they don\u2019t have a big enough bedroom for a queen-size bed. Queen sheet dimensions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Queen-size mattresses<\/a> are the most popular mattress size. They sleep two people comfortably and are also great for single sleepers who are lucky enough to have enough space in their bedrooms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When you\u2019re ready to upgrade to a queen-size bed, pay attention to sheet sizes so that you\u2019re not accidentally buying full-size sheets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

King-size mattresses<\/a> are 76 inches wide by 80 inches long, which is the perfect size if your family now includes children and pets who like to snuggle up with you on Sunday mornings. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A California king mattress<\/a> has slightly different dimensions than a standard king. At 72 inches wide by 84 inches long, it’s slightly narrower than the standard king but is 4 inches longer. It’s perfect for taller couples who are willing to sacrifice 4 inches of width for the privilege of not having their toes hang off the mattress at night. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Make sure the sheets that you buy are the right size. King-size sheets won’t fit on a California king bed. Fitted sheet pocket depth<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

It’s not enough to know the width and length of your mattress. You also need to consider its height<\/a> to make sure your fitted sheet is deep enough and won’t slip off the edges<\/a> of your mattress at night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A properly sized fitted sheet should cover the sides of the mattress completely and tuck underneath it. For that reason, it’s best to choose sheets that are 1 to 2 inches deeper than the height of your mattress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Keep in mind that standard fitted sheets generally fit mattresses 7 to 12 inches thick, which is also the typical height range for most mattresses. If your mattress is thicker than this, you\u2019ll need to pay special attention when choosing fitted sheets to make sure they\u2019re big enough. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
