And while living with RA can be challenging on a variety of levels, one challenge that I wasn\u2019t necessarily expecting is how it\u2019s impacted my sleep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>RA (and the pain that comes with it) has made it harder for me to fall and stay asleep. It\u2019s also made it harder for me to feel like I\u2019ve gotten a good night\u2019s rest\u2014even if I\u2019ve technically clocked a full eight hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So how, exactly, are rheumatoid arthritis and sleep connected? And how can people with RA (myself included!) get better sleep? Keep reading to find out.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-is-rheumatoid-arthritis\">What is rheumatoid arthritis?&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune condition that affects the joints. Currently, there\u2019s no known cause for RA (similar to other autoimmune disorders)\u2014and while symptoms vary from person to person, the most common symptoms of RA include joint pain, stiffness, and fatigue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-can-rheumatoid-arthritis-cause-sleep-problems\">Can rheumatoid arthritis cause sleep problems?&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Sleep problems are common for people living with RA. Research has shown that anywhere&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/articles\/10.3389\/fpubh.2022.940161\/full\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">between 50% and 75% of people with RA suffer from sleep disturbances<\/a>\u2014while&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1002\/acr.24999\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">another study<\/a>&nbsp;found that nearly two-thirds of RA patients who participated in the study qualified for at least one&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.saatva.com\/blog\/sleep-disorders\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sleep disorder<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe exact cause of\u2026[sleep] disturbance is multifactorial, and ranges from joint\/muscle pain from the disease itself to medication side-effects and\/or co-morbid conditions such as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.saatva.com\/blog\/sleeping-with-anxiety\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">anxiety<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.saatva.com\/blog\/depression-and-sleep\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">depression<\/a>,\u201d says\u00a0Saimun Singla, DO,\u00a0triple board-certified physician and\u00a0founder of Texas-based\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rheumtogrowtx.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Rheum to Grow<\/a>\u00a0(and a person living with an RA diagnosis herself). \u201cRegardless of the underlying cause, patients with RA end up with fragmented or poor sleep quality.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>RA impacts sleep in a variety of ways, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Insomnia<\/strong>. People with RA often struggle to fall asleep, particularly when they\u2019re experiencing pain\u2014which can, over time, lead to more chronic&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.saatva.com\/blog\/tips-for-treating-insomnia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">insomnia<\/a>. In fact, according to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/32471477\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">one study<\/a>, more than half of patients with RA report struggling with insomnia.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Not getting high-quality rest<\/strong>. One of the main symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis is pain\u2014and that pain can make it difficult to fall and stay asleep. Even when people with RA are able to get to sleep, they often find their sleep quality lacking;&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6210607\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">research<\/a>&nbsp;shows that people with rheumatoid arthritis report a high prevalence of non-optimal sleep (which is generally linked to pain level).&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Medication challenges<\/strong>. Most people with rheumatoid arthritis are on medication, some of which can cause issues with sleep. For example, prednisone is a steroid commonly used to treat inflammation associated with RA\u2014and, in many patients, is also&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7357890\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">known to cause sleep issues<\/a>, including insomnia.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Clearly, RA can cause poor sleep. And while poor sleep can negatively impact&nbsp;<em>anyone\u2019s<\/em>&nbsp;health, it can be particularly detrimental to people living with rheumatoid arthritis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMost of us have felt the drag of not getting enough sleep,&#8221;&nbsp;says Singla.&nbsp;&#8220;But in RA patients, poor sleep can have detrimental effects on multiple levels.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Singla, poor or fragmented sleep can cause an increase in stress hormones and inflammatory markers, which can make RA symptoms worse. It can also interfere with the way the central nervous system processes pain\u2014lowering pain thresholds and increasing pain sensitivity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis leads to the vicious cycle of pain, inflammation, and disease flares,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-to-sleep-better-with-rheumatoid-arthritis\">How to sleep better with rheumatoid arthritis<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The good news? There are ways to get better sleep with rheumatoid arthritis. Some key tips for how to sleep better with rheumatoid arthritis include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-carve-out-more-time-for-sleep\">Carve out more time for sleep<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The first way to sleep better with rheumatoid arthritis is to schedule time for more sleep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen you have an&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.saatva.com\/blog\/sleep-and-autoimmune-disease\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">autoimmune illness<\/a>&nbsp;[like RA], you need more sleep than a normal person\u2014especially during a flare,\u201d says Singla.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While there\u2019s no one-size-fits-all solution to how much sleep you\u2019ll need to feel rested with rheumatoid arthritis, it&#8217;s important to give yourself more time than you think you\u2019ll need to sleep\u2014for example, by aiming to go to bed a few hours earlier or carving out time for midday naps when possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And if you\u2019re struggling with this condition, don\u2019t feel guilty about rheumatoid arthritis and sleeping all the time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt&#8217;s important to give your body the time to rest so it can heal both physically and mentally,\u201d says Singla. \u201cListen to your body when it wants more rest.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-treat-pain-before-sleep\">Treat pain before sleep<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the main reasons RA impacts sleep is because it causes pain\u2014and that pain can make it hard to fall and stay asleep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, if you want to improve your sleep with RA, one of the best things you can do is treat your pain before you get into bed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Depending on your symptoms, \u201csupportive treatment options to help improve joint pains include applying an NSAID topical gel or hot pack over the painful joints, a paraffin wax dip right before bed to help loosen the joints of the hand, or even sleeping in compression gloves,\u201d says Singla.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.saatva.com\/blog\/baths-and-sleep\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">pre-bedtime bath<\/a>&nbsp;or shower can also help. \u201cConsider a hot shower or bath to not only loosen up painful joints but to create a sense of relaxation in general,\u201d says Singla.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-choose-the-right-sleep-position\">Choose the right sleep position\u2026<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The best way to sleep with rheumatoid arthritis is to find the best position. But what is the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.saatva.com\/blog\/sleeping-positions-pros-cons\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">best sleep position<\/a>&nbsp;for rheumatoid arthritis?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The answer? It depends. There\u2019s no universal rheumatoid arthritis sleep position. Different people living with RA will have different types of pain\u2014and, therefore, will need different sleep positions to sleep more comfortably. For example, someone who has knee pain is going to need a different sleep position than someone who has&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.saatva.com\/blog\/back-pain\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">back pain<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The key is to find a position that takes the pressure off of your joints\u2014and if you can\u2019t find a position that feels comfortable, consider incorporating props (like pillows or a folded-up blanket) to relieve excess pressure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAdding a small pillow underneath the small of the back and\/or the knees can also be helpful,\u201d says Singla.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re dealing with RA and haven\u2019t found an ideal sleep position, keep experimenting. \u201cFinding the right position can take some time, but it&#8217;s worth playing with to reduce pain and help you sleep,\u201d says Singla.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-and-the-right-mattress\">\u2026and the right mattress<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you want to sleep comfortably with RA, finding the right sleep position is important\u2014but so is finding the right&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.saatva.com\/mattresses\"
