I have found that my sleep scores improved that same night on my sessions based on my wearables.\u201d You can be in it more if you want, but Leary cautions that more than 120 minutes won\u2019t really make a difference in your sleep levels (though adding more time might have other benefits aside from sleep).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Frequency:&nbsp;<\/strong>\u201cFor best results, especially in terms of sleep, I\u2019d say to use the oxygen chamber two to three times a week,\u201d says Leary. Consistent sessions help maintain elevated oxygen levels in the body, contributing to overall well-being and better sleep.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Preparation<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Clothing:&nbsp;<\/strong>Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing to enter the chamber. This is because you\u2019ll likely be in there for quite a while. It\u2019s imperative to stay comfy in clothing that\u2019ll be more beneficial to help you relax\u2014and also help prepare you best for sleep.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Hydration:&nbsp;<\/strong>\u201cEnsure you are well-hydrated before your session,\u201d says Leary. \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.saatva.com\/blog\/benefits-of-drinking-water-for-sleep\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Drinking water<\/a>&nbsp;can help enhance the oxygenation process\u2014the more hydrated your lungs are, the more effective they are at their job.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Relaxation:\u00a0<\/strong>Leary recommends using the oxygen chamber session as a time to relax. \u201cBring a book, listen to calming music, or do breathwork to make the most of your time in the chamber,\u201d he says. This can help calm your nervous system down and make you better prepared to sleep.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">During the session<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Breathing:&nbsp;<\/strong>\u201cBreathe normally and deeply to maximize oxygen intake,\u201d says Leary. \u201cThe increased pressure will naturally enhance oxygen absorption in your lungs, but if you can focus on just nasal breathing in the experience (which helps you breathe in deeper), the results will be better.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">After the session<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Rest:&nbsp;<\/strong>After your session, allow your body some time to adjust. \u201cResting for a few minutes can help you fully benefit from the increased oxygen levels,\u201d adds Leary. \u201cI like to do a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.saatva.com\/blog\/sauna-for-sleep\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sauna<\/a>&nbsp;after my hyperbaric sessions.\u201d If anything, just take some time before you immerse yourself back into your daily routine<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Who should avoid an oxygen chamber<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s important to note that due to the pressurized nature of an oxygen chamber, it\u2019s not safe for everyone to use.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPregnant people should avoid oxygen chambers, as well as people with certain medical conditions, such as untreated pneumothorax and severe COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) since the chamber can exacerbate already restricted airflow,\u201d says Leary. \u201cThose undergoing chemotherapy with certain agents should consult their doctor before using an oxygen chamber as well.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Those with acute&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.saatva.com\/blog\/how-to-sleep-with-ear-infection\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ear or sinus infections<\/a>&nbsp;should also avoid sessions until these conditions are resolved as pressure changes can exacerbate those symptoms.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The bottom line: If you\u2019re thinking about trying an oxygen chamber and believe you\u2019re susceptible to certain side effects from the pressure changes, consult a doctor before you do so.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What happened when I used an oxygen chamber&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The first time I tried the oxygen chamber at Remedy Place, I have to admit I had no idea what to expect\u2014and honestly, the chamber looked a little bit like a weird spaceship, especially with its glass doors and tubular shape.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I could totally see why anyone with claustrophobia would hate it, but since I didn\u2019t have that issue, I decided it was worth a shot to try. I didn\u2019t initially start going to help myself sleep, though\u2014it was more to help heal the pain in my knee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The area in my knee where I had the pain wasn\u2019t getting enough blood flow to heal naturally, but the theory was that the increased oxygen in my bloodstream would help heal that area as well as play a part in pain management.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While it did help with pain and healing, the biggest benefit I\u2019ve gotten from this modality has been improved sleep, especially if I do it two times a week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was almost like an out-of-body, meditative experience, and the 60 minutes I spent inside the chamber felt like it passed by way too fast. After the session, I felt like I could breathe much deeper for several hours after.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By the time I was ready to go to bed five hours later, I really believe I had reached a very steady, calm state that allowed me to regulate my nervous system better and therefore prepare me for&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.saatva.com\/blog\/what-is-deep-sleep-and-do-you-need-deep-sleep\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">deeper sleep<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Leary, this isn\u2019t at all a surprise. \u201cYour breathing is deeper, and this type of breathwork automatically calms the body down,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I also noticed this calm feeling lasting over the next couple of days, even when I had tons of deadlines and was running late for a workout class. While I was still stressed, of course, I could handle that stress a lot better.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>By the time I was ready to go to bed five hours later, I really believe I had reached a very steady, calm state that allowed me to regulate my nervous system better and therefore prepare me for&nbsp;deeper sleep.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>I think the oxygen chamber helped increase my resiliency to stressful situations\u2014which in turn let me sleep better.
