A&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.e-conolight.com\/blog\/post\/afraid-of-the-dark\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">recent survey<\/a>&nbsp;conducted by lighting company e-conolight confirmed that nyctophobia, the phobia of darkness, doesn\u2019t only affect children.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nearly half of the respondents said they disliked or feared the dark, and only 4% identified as enjoying darkness.\u00a0This fear can be especially challenging at bedtime when our eyelids act as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.saatva.com\/blog\/do-blackout-curtains-work\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">blackout curtains<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this article, we\u2019ll explore nyctophobia in adults and explain how to address the fear to access a peaceful rest.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What is nyctophobia?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Although it may not feel this way to those who experience it, the Cleveland Clinic defines nyctophobia as an&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/22785-nyctophobia-fear-of-the-dark\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">anxiety disorder<\/a>\u2014or irrational fear\u2014brought on by an extreme fear of the dark.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The phobia causes an individual to feel anxious, panic, and therefore become avoidant of certain situations or environments where lights are dimmed or completely turned off.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since we must close our eyes in order to sleep, people with nyctophobia have trouble sleeping and often suffer from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.saatva.com\/blog\/tips-for-treating-insomnia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">insomnia<\/a>.\u00a0Unlike skipping out on movie theaters or going out at night,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.saatva.com\/blog\/how-long-can-you-go-without-sleep\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">skipping sleep<\/a>\u00a0altogether isn&#8217;t possible. Even interrupted slumber is harmful to our health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Why am I afraid of the dark?&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Nyctophobia doesn\u2019t typically occur from watching a few\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.saatva.com\/blog\/this-is-why-you-cant-sleep-after-watching-scary-movies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">scary movies<\/a>\u00a0or hearing ghost stories by the campfire.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/winitclinic.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sham Singh<\/a>, MD, sleep expert and psychiatrist at WINIT Clinic, says the phobia often stems from childhood trauma or a disturbing occurrence in a darkened environment, such as getting lost in the dark or experiencing a night-time burglary in adulthood.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEvolutionary biology might also contribute to this since our ancestors had more reasons to be afraid of predators in the dark; that&#8217;s a partial explanation as to why the fear does not cease to exist,&#8221; he says. &#8220;In some cases, anxiety disorders or overactive imaginations amplify feelings of danger when one is surrounded by darkness.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other causes are genetics or growing up around people who are fearful of the dark.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What triggers nyctophobia?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Winding down from your day, letting go of the day\u2019s stresses, and beginning your&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.saatva.com\/blog\/10-nighttime-activities-help-relax\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">nighttime routine<\/a>&nbsp;should provide a sense of calm and feel restorative. This is often not the case for people who get excessively nervous when we lose light.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There&#8217;s no way to control when the sun sets and rises, which can incite anxiety and panic and an overall unsettling feeling for those with nyctophobia. A simple, everyday action can feel terrifying and cause undue panic and fear.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWalking into a dark room and having to reach for the light switch is super stressful,&#8221;&nbsp;says&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.savantcare.com\/shebna-n-osanmoh-i\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Shebna N. Osanmoh<\/a>, a&nbsp;board-certified psychiatric nurse practitioner&nbsp;at Savant Care in Santa Barbara, Calif.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even getting up at night to use the bathroom or checking out weird noises in the dark can be anxiety-inducing.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBeing alone in the dark, especially during power outages or when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.saatva.com\/blog\/why-cant-i-sleep-by-myself\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sleeping alone<\/a>, triggers these fears,&#8221; says Osanmoh. &#8220;Some of my patients can\u2019t close their eyes in the shower or walk to their car at night.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What are the symptoms of nyctophobia?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Those with nyctophobia feel these unpleasant sensations on a daily basis, which can derail their lives.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThey may feel extreme anxiety, have panic attacks, a heightened heart rate, shortness of breath, sweating, shaking, or a sense of dread,&#8221; says\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sleepopolis.com\/experts\/dr-raj-dasgupta\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Raj Dasgupta<\/a>, MD, chief medical advisor for Sleepopolis.\u00a0&#8220;Others report feeling nauseous or lightheaded, as the body reacts to the fear.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additional symptoms include intrusive thoughts and chest tightness.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How to get over your fear of the dark&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>While there&#8217;s no one-size-fits-all approach to overcoming nyctophobia, there are simple strategies you can use to gradually conquer your fear of darkness to start sleeping better.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Using a calming app to slow and deepen your breathing, practice&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.saatva.com\/blog\/progressive-muscle-relaxation-for-sleep\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">progressive muscle relaxation<\/a>&nbsp;(tensing and releasing muscle groups), or listen to guided imagery can intercept a panic attack and teach your body how to relax and feel safe before bed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many professionals suggest&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.saatva.com\/blog\/cognitive-behavioral-therapy-insomnia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">cognitive behavioral therapy<\/a>&nbsp;to unearth the root cause of the fear and learn coping tools to manage it.&nbsp;Singh says this strategy is highly effective because&nbsp;it changes how individuals think about the dark and confront irrational fears.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He also recommends temporary medication for extreme cases while exploring the phobia in therapy sessions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How to sleep better when you&#8217;re afraid of the dark&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Beyond breathing techniques and guided imagery, soothing music or white, pink, brown, or&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.saatva.com\/blog\/green-noise\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">green noise<\/a>&nbsp;can help a person with nyctophobia feel comfortable in their darkened surroundings.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Making your bedroom a peaceful oasis by reducing clutter, choosing peaceful colors for your&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.saatva.com\/bedding\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">bedding<\/a>&nbsp;and walls, and introducing aromatherapy by using an&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.saatva.com\/blog\/diffuser-benefits\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">oil diffuser<\/a>&nbsp;can help soothe your nerves.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Surrounding yourself with grounding or cozy items, like a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.saatva.com\/bedding?types=blankets+and+quilts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">cozy blanket<\/a>&nbsp;or a stuffed animal, may also be helpful.
