If you’ve ever had a dream about sexual activity that’s outside your usual, real-life experiences or desires, you might even feel bothered or upset after waking.

However, there are scientific reasons for sex dreams—even ones with content that alarms or embarrasses you upon waking.

Scientists still aren’t completely sure why we dream, but we do know dreams often help us untangle complicated emotions and situations from our waking hours.

Add to that the biological changes that occur during deep REM sleep—a rush of blood to the pelvis, hormonal surges, and more—and it makes complete sense that sometimes our dreamland dramas involve sex.

“[Sex dreams] might be a representation of some metaphor or theme that you’re going through in your life, an emotion or issue that you’re trying to work through, or avoid or suppress …” says Erika Kawamura, PsyD, a licensed psychologist and director of strategic initiatives at Equilibria Psychological Services in Philadelphia. “Or, it’s simply just not that deep, and the dream was just a dream.”

The science and psychology of sex dreams

Sex dreams are normal, common experiences that may reflect anything from a real-life desire or fantasy to a completely unrelated relationship or stressor in waking life.

Almost all of us dream during REM sleep every night, and these dreams give our brains a helpful outlet to process a wide range of emotions and memories.

The emotional and physical intensity of sex dreams may help us work through equally intense feelings or stressful situations.

“Sex dreams can become more frequent and vivid during stressful times because stress tends to activate the sympathetic nervous system,” says Kuramura.

In other words, stress can trigger sweating, elevated heart rate, faster breathing, and higher blood pressure.

“In turn, the brain can create sexual content to go along with those physical symptoms,” she explains.

Another possibility? A sexually stimulating dream “may be your brain and body’s effort to help seek comfort, pleasure, or relief from the stress and pressures,” she adds.

Ultimately, the trigger for your sex dream might have absolutely nothing to do with sex. During REM sleep, the stage most associated with dreaming, your body also undergoes physical changes that mirror the symptoms of sexual arousal (more on that below).

So if your brain is in a dream state, processing the emotions and stresses of real life, and your body is toeing the line of arousal, what happens? Sometimes, the answer is a sex dream.

Biological triggers: REM sleep, vasocongestion, and hormones

Vivid dreams most often occur during rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. Kawamura says biological, neurological, and hormonal characteristics of REM sleep can make it “the perfect recipe” for a sex dream.

Potential biological triggers for sex dreams during REM sleep include:

Vasocongestion. This increase in blood flow and blood pressure in the pelvic region occurs during REM, sexual arousal, and, in females, menstruation. Vasocongestion is also a factor that causes nocturnal erections.

Hormonal shifts. In addition to increased blood flow to the genitals, REM is associated with hormonal fluctuations, including a surge in testosterone in males.

Heart rate variations. The heart beats slowly and steadily during most sleep phases, but during REM sleep, your heart rate starts to reflect the activity you’re dreaming about.

Changes in brain activity. Kawamura says REM sleep involves “decreased activity in the frontal cortex, which translates to having less ‘filter’ and control over impulses.”

Psychological interpretations: processing relationships, desire, and stress

Remember, a sex dream can reflect daytime relationships and stressors that are completely unrelated to sex.

“Your brain continues to process your emotions and experiences from your waking hours when you sleep, and since dreams often happen during REM sleep, the content may present itself as sex dreams,” Kawamura says.

While some sex dreams might reflect your underlying sexual desires or fantasies, the research suggests that they might also reflect:

Your relationship dynamics. Sex dreams might help the brain process complicated relationship dynamics, including ones from childhood, such as an abusive or overbearing parent.

Your stress level. One study found frequent sex dreams are a sign of psychological stress. The dream’s pleasure may offer comfort, or its intensity or release may offer the relief of “blowing off steam.”

Your personality. Another study linked sex dream intensity to higher scores on personality tests measuring aggressiveness, neuroticism, or sensation-seeking traits.

Common sex dream themes and what they symbolize

First, understand that there’s no science-backed encyclopedia of common sex dreams and what they mean. Decoding dreams involves guesswork, and you should take a sex dream’s content with a grain of salt. Remember, sometimes a dream is just a dream.

Below, we unpack a few possible meanings for common sex dream themes:

Sex with a stranger. It can be difficult to decode the meaning of sex dreams about strangers since there’s no underlying relationship to process. These dreams may indicate that you have a desire for more sex or are feeling sexually unsatisfied. The dream may also involve sex with someone who exhibits the characteristics (physical, emotional, or otherwise) you want in your current or future partner.

Sex with your partner. Research suggests having sexual dreams about your current partner is reflective of long-lasting relationships, high relationship satisfaction, or a general desire for more sexual interaction.

Sex with a friend. Some experts say dreaming about having sex with a friend, coworker, or boss could mean that you admire the person or want to nurture a closer relationship with them.

Sex with an ex. This one is quite common. It might mean you’re missing something about that person, whether it’s their listening ear or the spark you felt at the start of the relationship. You might also be working through real-life news, such as an ex getting a new job, moving houses, or picking up with someone new.

Why you shouldn’t feel guilty about sex dreams

Remember: Sex dreams are normal. Recent research shows both men and women have sex dreams that involve someone they’re not having sex with in real life.

Women’s sex dreams involve someone who has never been a real-life sexual partner about 80% of the time, while men dream about non-real-life partners about 86% of the time.

How daytime thoughts and media exposure influence dreams

While it’s true that sex dreams often don’t reflect your daytime desires, it would be incorrect to assume that your daytime thoughts, wants, and media exposure don’t influence your dreams at all.

Research shows what you watch (or scroll through) before falling asleep can moderately influence dream content.

Researchers have found that people who consume violent media tend to have more violent dreams. People who consume sexual media tend to have more sex dreams.

Ultimately, dreams help the brain process waking experiences, thoughts, and memories. If you’ve noticed an uptick in sex dreams, ask yourself, “Have I been watching more sexual media or talking or thinking about sex more while awake?”

Likewise, “Am I dealing with trouble at work or in my relationships? Could my sex dreams be providing comfort, relief, or control in a stressful season?”

No one-size-fits-all dream interpretation tool exists, but reflecting on your dreams might help you pinpoint the emotions or real-life scenarios your brain is trying to process.

Sometimes, a dream is just a dream. Other times, it’s a metaphor. The important thing is to know thyself, and sometimes our dreams, even sex dreams, can help.

FAQs

Are sex dreams a normal part of REM sleep?

“Sex dreams are a normal and healthy part of REM sleep,” Kawamura says. Research shows 80% to 95% of adults have sex dreams.

Do sex dreams reflect real-life desires?

Not always. Research suggests the intensity of sex dreams may reflect real-life psychological stress or emotional intensity, but the content might not reflect your true desires or desired actions.

Why might sex dreams become more frequent during certain life stages or stressful periods?

Kawamura says sex dreams can become more frequent or intense during stressful periods because stress activates the boy’s sympathetic nervous system, which may trigger intense emotions as well as related symptoms such as sweating, high blood pressure, and increased heart rate.

Sex dreams can be confusing.
