But did you know they’re buzzing around the world of sleep too?

“Certain peptides help regulate your internal clock, influence sleep-wake cycles, and interact with systems involved in stress, hormones, and recovery,” says Greg Jones, board-certified naturopathic physician and founder and medical director of Enovative Wellness Center.

But what is the connection between peptides and sleep, exactly? Ahead, we’re breaking down everything you need to know about peptides and their impact on how you get your beauty rest.

What are peptides?

Let’s start by discussing what peptides actually are. Basically, these tiny chains of amino acids are the building blocks which make up proteins.

“These little messengers in the body act as signaling molecules, helping signal cells perform specific functions,” explains Jones.

He adds that different peptides can help with hormone release, inflammation, tissue repair, and immune responses.

There are a lot of different peptides, and some are more commonly known than others. For example, you may have heard of insulin, oxytocin, or endorphins.

And, while we’re focusing on sleep specifically here, it’s worth noting that within the skincare world, they can help strengthen elastin and collagen, which can help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, dullness, or crepey skin. (Not too shabby, right?)

Jones stresses that peptides aren’t all the same.

While some are well-established medications that can help people with specific medical issues, “many of the peptides marketed online have limited evidence supporting their benefits,” he says.

How peptides interact with sleep signals

“Your body is constantly sending signals to help regulate when you feel awake and when you feel sleepy,” says Jones.

Peptides can work their way into this process because of their ability to act as signaling molecules—so they may be used to do the following:

Regulate your internal clock

Influence sleep-wake cycles

Interact with systems involved in stress, hormones, and recovery

One such peptide is orexin, which helps stabilize the transition between sleep and waking up.

When orexin signals are strong, it stimulates the production of dopamine, which pretty much is the exact opposite of what you want when you’re trying to get your beloved eight hours of sleep.

Jones says that since “the science varies significantly depending on the specific peptide,” it’s important to understand which peptides actually work for sleep and recovery.

“Many marketed for sleep or recovery still lack strong human evidence establishing their safety and effectiveness,” he explains.

Types of peptides related to rest and recovery

“Peptides are getting a lot of attention in the sleep and recovery world,” says Jones. He specifically calls out the following peptides in relation to sleep:

CJC-1295 and ipamorelin, which target growth hormone pathways

BPC-157, which is used for tissue repair

TB-500, for tissue healing and repair claims

CJC-1295 is especially interesting in regards to sleep since Jones says that “growth hormone is released primarily during deep slow-wave (non-REM) sleep and simultaneously deep sleep promotes growth hormone release.”

What does this mean? In a study by University of California, Berkeley, it was found that this growth hormone helps build muscle and bone and reduce fat, while a brainstem feedback mechanism helps promote wakefulness after a good night’s sleep.

Are peptide supplements safe for sleep?

The short answer? Maybe, maybe not. While peptides are buzzy, they might not actually do much for your overall sleep habits—and could even be harmful. And while some peptides signal the brain to rest or release growth hormones, they shouldn’t be used as quick-fix sleeping pills.

Jones stresses that not only are they not established sleep aids, but “there’s limited high-quality evidence showing that they safely improve sleep quality or treat insomnia,” he says.

He also cautions against peptide supplements sold online, since he says they may have “questionable purity, dosing accuracy, or contamination risks.”

His biggest concern is where peptide supplements are sourced.

“Almost all peptides people buy online are sold as ‘research use only’ chemicals, without oversight of purity, potency, or sterility,” he says, cautioning that independent testing can lead to mislabeling or contamination.

Instead of relying on peptides you buy blindly, Jones says you should work with a clinician—and, even then, they influence so many things in the body that it might still be dicey.

“Peptides are still potent signaling molecules,” he says. “They can influence hormones, blood sugar, and immune function. That’s why they belong inside a supervised medical relationship with proper screening and monitoring, not in an online shopping cart.”

The bottom line? Before you start taking peptides and introducing them into your sleep routine, make sure you consult your doctor to see if they’re right for you.

Natural ways to boost your body’s recovery during sleep

Wondering how to get your Z’s without using peptides? Jones has some simple tips and tricks for you.

Aim for 7–9 hours of quality sleep.

Be consistent with the times you go to sleep and wake up each day.

Get morning sunlight to help regulate your body’s internal clock.

Make sure your bedroom is cool, dark, and quiet.

Eat a balanced diet. “It’s also important to get enough protein throughout the day to give your muscles the building blocks they need, plus a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, healthy fats, and essential nutrients,” emphasizes Jones.

Watch what you drink. “Hydration matters,” Jones says. “Drink enough water throughout the day without chugging a gallon right before bed.” He recommends steering clear of caffeine in the late afternoon or evening, and limiting alcohol intake. “Many people are surprised to learn that even though alcohol may help them fall asleep, it can disrupt sleep,” he says.

Wind down before bed. “Don’t underestimate a wind-down routine,” Jones says. “Just doing a little deep breathing and gentle stretching can help settle your body down as you transition from go-go-go to lights out.”

FAQs

Are sleep peptides safe to take?

Maybe. While peptides can be beneficial for sleep, they aren’t a one-size-fits-all solution. And since many of the peptides sold online may be labeled wrong or contaminated, they can actually end up being more harmful than helpful. Before you start using peptides, you should speak with your doctor to find out if they’re right for you.

Do peptides help you stay in deep sleep longer?

Some specific peptides can help increase the time you spend in deep sleep (aka slow-wave sleep). This is because they can help stimulate the release of growth hormones, reduce stress or neural arousal, and regulate circadian rhythms.

How are peptides different than melatonin?

Peptides are chains of amino acids that work to support tissue repair and stimulate growth hormone release. Meanwhile, melatonin is a hormone that tells the body it’s time to sleep. Essentially, melatonin helps shift your biological clock and initiate the onset of sleep, while peptides act as regulatory or signaling molecules to target different hormones or areas of the nervous system.

If you’re a skincare junkie, chances are you’ve introduced peptides into your daily routine.
