For a quick bedroom makeover, whether to match the season or align with your new style, consider a duvet cover.

This versatile bedding option slips over your duvet insert (often filled with down, feathers, or cotton) much like a pillowcase covers your pillow.

A duvet cover lets you easily change the fabric, color, and theme of your bedroom without having to swap and store away heavy comforters.

However, it’s important to choose the right size duvet cover. The wrong fitting option can cause uncomfortable bunching, leaving your bed looking lumpy instead of inviting.

We’ve created a guide to help you find the correct duvet cover size for your mattress so you can enjoy the most cozy and comfortable bed possible.

Standard duvet cover dimensions chart by bed size

There are many factors to consider when choosing the ideal duvet cover size. But primarily, it’s about how much of your duvet you want to hang over the sides of your bed.

Here are the recommended duvet cover sizes based on your mattress size:

Mattress Size
Mattress Dimensions (in)
Duvet Cover Dimensions (in)

Why duvet cover and insert sizes don’t always match exactly

Choosing a new duvet cover to match your insert can be a puzzling challenge. Duvet inserts and covers often come in different sizes as there aren’t universal size guidelines for this type of bedding.

Use a tape measure to determine your insert’s size rather than relying on generic mattress sizing. This helps you avoid buying a duvet cover that’s too big for your insert, which can result in a baggy, flat look.

You also want to avoid buying a duvet cover that’s too small as it can look bunchy and ill-fitting. Ideally, opt for a duvet cover that’s the same size as your insert or a couple of inches smaller.

The 2-inch rule for a fluffy, full duvet look

If you’ve ever stayed at a hotel and wondered how they managed to achieve that luxurious, fluffy look, it’s due to a specific sizing trick.

Choose a duvet cover that’s 2 inches smaller in both width and length than the insert. This will create a full, fluffy appearance that won’t shift or bunch up while you sleep.

You’ll also avoid cold pockets caused by excess duvet cover fabric.

How to choose a duvet cover for oversized or deep mattresses

If you have a pillow top or oversized mattress, such as a California king or larger, an ill-fitting duvet cover can make the duvet look too small or lead to a nightly battle for the covers between you and your bed partner.

An appropriately sized duvet cover (and insert, if you don’t have one already) provides generous overhang.

A good rule of thumb is to go up a size from your mattress to ensure enough coverage on all three sides. Be sure to consider your existing duvet insert size as well.
