{"id":32096,"date":"2024-06-11T23:11:00","date_gmt":"2024-06-11T23:11:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/press-room.saatva.com\/?post_type=announcements&#038;p=32096"},"modified":"2026-03-19T16:22:45","modified_gmt":"2026-03-19T16:22:45","slug":"saatva-2024-sleep-survey","status":"publish","type":"announcements","link":"https:\/\/press-room.saatva.com\/announcements\/saatva-2024-sleep-survey\/","title":{"rendered":"Saatva 2024 Sleep Survey"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A new survey from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.saatva.com\/\" id=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Saatva<\/a>, the Smarter Luxury Sleep Company, finds that Millennials are sleeping longer, and better, than any other generation.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">Saatva surveyed 2,000 Americans divided among Gen Z (1997-2012), Millennials (1981-1996), Gen X (1965-1980), and Boomers (1946-1964) to find out who sleeps best and why. Among the highlights:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1080\" height=\"1080\" src=\"https:\/\/press-room.saatva.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/ZnHKfJm069VX12yb_Artboard5.avif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-32098\" srcset=\"https:\/\/press-room.saatva.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/ZnHKfJm069VX12yb_Artboard5.avif 1080w, https:\/\/press-room.saatva.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/ZnHKfJm069VX12yb_Artboard5-450x450.avif 450w, https:\/\/press-room.saatva.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/ZnHKfJm069VX12yb_Artboard5-1024x1024.avif 1024w, https:\/\/press-room.saatva.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/ZnHKfJm069VX12yb_Artboard5-768x768.avif 768w, https:\/\/press-room.saatva.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/ZnHKfJm069VX12yb_Artboard5-737x737.avif 737w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1080px) 100vw, 1080px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>While 75% of Americans get between 6 and 8 hours of sleep per night, Millennials get the most sleep, with 85% logging 6+ hours. Gen X gets the least, with 18% sleeping 5 hours or fewer.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Millennials also rate their sleep quality as better than any other generation. Nearly half (49%) say they have good sleep. Gen X gets the worst sleep, with 27% rating their sleep as poor.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Among all generations, 41% rate their sleep as \u201cgood,\u201d 39% say it\u2019s \u201cokay,\u201d and 20% rate their sleep as \u201cbad.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">\u201cYounger people tend to report better sleep quality than older people. It\u2019s a common topic that I see in my practice,\u201d says Shantha Gowda, PsyD., a licensed clinical health psychologist and behavioral sleep medicine specialist based in San Francisco. She points out that Gen X is the \u201csandwich\u201d generation that is raising young children while dealing with aging parents. \u201cGen X also has more of a \u2018grind\u2019 mentality when it comes to work,\u201d Gowda says. \u201cYounger Millennials and Gen Z are more likely to focus on work\/life balance.\u201d She notes that all of those stresses could contribute to Gen X\u2019s sleep dissatisfaction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1080\" height=\"1080\" src=\"https:\/\/press-room.saatva.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/ZnHKfpm069VX12yd_Artboard7.avif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-32099\" srcset=\"https:\/\/press-room.saatva.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/ZnHKfpm069VX12yd_Artboard7.avif 1080w, https:\/\/press-room.saatva.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/ZnHKfpm069VX12yd_Artboard7-450x450.avif 450w, https:\/\/press-room.saatva.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/ZnHKfpm069VX12yd_Artboard7-1024x1024.avif 1024w, https:\/\/press-room.saatva.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/ZnHKfpm069VX12yd_Artboard7-768x768.avif 768w, https:\/\/press-room.saatva.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/ZnHKfpm069VX12yd_Artboard7-737x737.avif 737w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1080px) 100vw, 1080px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-left\">What\u2019s Keeping Americans Up at Night?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">The survey also looked at the \u201csleep stealers\u201d that are robbing Americans of their rest.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Among all generations, the most frequently cited culprits were finances (35%), physical health (33%), and work (25%).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>But for Gen Z, the biggest disruptor of sleep was social media. Over one-third of Gen Z respondents (35%) blamed social media for keeping them up at night.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>On the other hand, Gen Z was also the most likely to seek help for dealing with their anxiety, with nearly one-quarter (24%) having gone to therapy.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Back pain was the most frequently reported health condition for all generations (31%), followed by insomnia (20%) and sleep apnea (15%).&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">Not surprisingly, back pain dominated the physical complaints for Gen X and Boomers, but 29% of Millennials and 15% of Gen Z also cited it as their top physical ailment.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">&#8220;Back pain does not discriminate. It affects all adults to a significant degree without giving credence to psychographics or demographics,\u201d says chiropractor Chris Tomshack, CEO of HealthSource Chiropractic. \u201cIn fact, fully 50% of adults suffer from chronic or daily back pain, while 80% of adults will suffer a serious back pain event at some point in their life.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1080\" height=\"1080\" src=\"https:\/\/press-room.saatva.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/ZnHKfZm069VX12yc_Artboard6.avif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-32100\" srcset=\"https:\/\/press-room.saatva.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/ZnHKfZm069VX12yc_Artboard6.avif 1080w, https:\/\/press-room.saatva.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/ZnHKfZm069VX12yc_Artboard6-450x450.avif 450w, https:\/\/press-room.saatva.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/ZnHKfZm069VX12yc_Artboard6-1024x1024.avif 1024w, https:\/\/press-room.saatva.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/ZnHKfZm069VX12yc_Artboard6-768x768.avif 768w, https:\/\/press-room.saatva.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/ZnHKfZm069VX12yc_Artboard6-737x737.avif 737w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1080px) 100vw, 1080px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-left\">Men, Women, and Couples<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">When it comes to sleep, the survey revealed some marked differences between the sexes. While more women than men say sleep is \u201cvery important\u201d to them (67% vs. 58%), women are less likely than men to be satisfied with the quality of the sleep they are getting. Women also report that they struggle more than men with falling and staying asleep.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Men consistently rate their sleep quality as better than women, with 45% rating their sleep quality as good, vs. only 36% of women. Similarly, more women (23%) than men (16%) say they sleep badly.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Men are more likely to wake up earlier, with 22% rising between 5 am and 6 am, vs. 18% of women.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>However, men are also more likely to try to make up for lack of sleep on the weekend, with 38% saying they rise later on the weekend than during the week, vs. 35% of women.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cSleep divorce\u201d is a trend among all generations, with 16% of all partnered couples reporting they sleep in separate beds. Boomers lead the way, with 21% of couples sleeping apart.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1080\" height=\"1080\" src=\"https:\/\/press-room.saatva.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/ZnHKe5m069VX12ya_Artboard4.avif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-32101\" srcset=\"https:\/\/press-room.saatva.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/ZnHKe5m069VX12ya_Artboard4.avif 1080w, https:\/\/press-room.saatva.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/ZnHKe5m069VX12ya_Artboard4-450x450.avif 450w, https:\/\/press-room.saatva.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/ZnHKe5m069VX12ya_Artboard4-1024x1024.avif 1024w, https:\/\/press-room.saatva.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/ZnHKe5m069VX12ya_Artboard4-768x768.avif 768w, https:\/\/press-room.saatva.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/ZnHKe5m069VX12ya_Artboard4-737x737.avif 737w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1080px) 100vw, 1080px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-left\">How the Generations Get Better Sleep<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">Different generations say they have tried\u2014or abandoned\u2014a variety of habits in an effort to improve their sleep.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Gen Z and Millennials were most likely to have curbed electronics use, with 25% saying they have started turning off devices before bed.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>All generations cited giving up caffeine before bed as their #1 habit change for better sleep (35%), followed by not eating a large evening meal (30%) or drinking a lot of water before bedtime (24%).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Music was the most popular stress reliever, with 61% of all respondents saying they have used it to relax before sleep.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>When it comes to cannabis, alcohol, and sleep supplements,&nbsp; Millennials were the most likely to use cannabis (19%) or alcohol (11%) before bed, while Boomers (18%) were the most likely to use sleep supplements.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-left\">About the Survey<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">All figures, unless otherwise stated, are from YouGov Plc. Total sample size was 2,017 adults. Fieldwork was undertaken between 8\u201312 April 2024. The survey was carried out online.
