Dreamtime With Tom Segura

Tom Segura and Christina Pazsitzky know the value of finding the humor in
everyday life. As comedians and co-hosts to the popular podcast Your Mom’s House, they encounter a wide variety of funny people. But, as parents and partners, it’s their relatable dynamic that has won the hearts and laughs from a growing number of listeners.

We had the chance to catch up with Tom and learn the backstory behind their podcast; how they balance work, life, and a young son at home; and how they manage to make sleep a priority in their hectic and exciting life:

How did your podcast get started?

We were encouraged by a lot of other comics. It was 2010 and podcasting was starting to pick up steam though it wasn’t at the level it’s at today. Eventually, Christina and I gave in and a friend of ours, Brian Redban, started producing the show with us. We did 40 episodes in his apartment before taking it over and doing it ourselves.

We imagine you meet a lot of interesting people. Do you have a favorite interview?

It’s hard to peg down just one. A lot of comics have been really funny and interesting: Ms. Pat, Ian Bagg, Joe Rogan, and Joey Diaz are just a few. Comedians really are our favorite people to hang out with. You can’t go back to civilians once you start hanging out with comics.

Do you have a favorite podcast that you listen to? Our office is pretty invested in This American Life.

Christina loves The Mental Illness Happy Hour. I’m digging Pod Save America.

No judgment. Morning person or night owl?

I’m 100% a night owl, though having a young son has FORCED me into being awake in the AM. It’s more of a new thing.

What’s your morning routine look like?

Well, thanks to our living alarm clock we are up around 6:15-6:45 am. We let the dogs out, make two cups of coffee and grab the little guy. Then it’s family breakfast and some playtime. Sometimes that’s the backyard, other days the park or the mall, which we affectionately refer to as The Country Club.

Most adults can’t get their day started without one of these. Coffee or tea?

Coffee X’s 1000.

Are you reading anything interesting right now?

I’m reading Ms. Pat’s autobiography, RABBIT. It’s a powerful memoir. She’s hilarious but has really been through a lot. Also, I’m reading Noah Hawley’s Before the Fall. It’s a really entertaining thriller. And Mark Manson’s The Subtle Art of Not Giving A F**K: Christina has read it and loves it.

I always have to have a glass of water at my bedside. Do you have any musts on your nightstand?

Water, glasses, something to read, and we both have macadamia nuts.

Top sheet or no top sheet? The Saatva audience has a lot of opinions on this.

Hell naw to the naw naw naw.

Walk us through your nighttime routine. How do you wind down in the evening?

Once the boy goes down the clock is ticking. We love to have some time to hang, talk, and we usually watch an episode of something. Currently, we’re into BILLIONS on Showtime.

Thank you so much for your time! To wrap it up…Is there any advice you would give to someone wanting to make their own podcast?

Try a new angle. You want an interesting way INTO a conversation or pick a topic that is genuinely interesting to you. Authenticity registers to an audience. For god’s sake buy decent microphones. No one wants to hear you speak into your iPhone.
