If you have a diminutive space or simply have a lot of essentials you try to pack into one room, smart storage is a necessity. While storage in the bedroom can consist of a nightstand or storage bench, there’s another piece of furniture you can consider as well: a storage bed.
Storage beds can be a great space-saving furniture piece, especially if you have a small bedroom and don’t have room for extra dressers or cabinets. In this article, we’ll walk you through everything you need to know about storage beds and how to choose the right one.
What is a storage bed?
A storage bed is a bed frame with storage—essentially, it incorporates built-in storage, explains Shamika Lynch, founder and principal designer of Maximizing Tiny Interiors.
It also wraps in under-bed storage. “Many times the storage is underneath the bed or behind the headboard,” notes Lynch.
Types of storage beds
There are several different types of storage beds you can consider. One of the most common types is a platform storage bed, which sits on a solid base and has built-in pull-out drawers.
Another one is the ottoman storage bed, which is a bed that includes hydraulics that help lift the base, revealing a sizable storage compartment underneath.
There are also drawer storage beds, which have drawers that can be opened from multiple sides of the frame.
The benefits of storage beds
Maximize space
Small bedrooms can be challenging when it comes to storage. As Lynch says, a storage bed uses space that’s otherwise wasted, making the most of your bedroom’s real estate.
Serve multiple purposes
Lynch points out that included storage “makes the bed multifunctional,” meaning it can do a lot more than simply serve as your place to sleep.
Provide a higher level of organization
A storage bed “organizes items within the bed rather than throwing things under the bed aimlessly,” Lynch says.
The drawbacks of storage beds
Awkward visuals
If you’re going for eye-pleasing aesthetics in your bedroom, a storage bed might not be the right choice for you since Lynch notes that these types of beds can be “clunky visually.”
Storage limitations
If you’re looking to store items in a storage bed that go beyond clothing and blankets, you might be disappointed. Items like thick comforters, luggage, and exercise equipment may be too large for a storage bed. As Lynch notes, a storage bed “might not store items you’re looking to store.”
Added height
Lynch says a storage bed “may add additional height to the bed that is not preferred,” something to keep in mind if you have physical limitations that make it difficult to climb into bed or if you have a pet who might have a tough time scaling that height.
How to choose the best storage bed for you
Let’s say you’re looking for a queen bed frame with storage. How do you begin your search? First of all, start by getting out your measuring tape.
“As with selecting any piece of furniture, be sure to check the dimensions,” Lynch recommends. “You want to make sure that the storage bed doesn’t become an eyesore in the space or impede the flow of the room.”
Then, you’ll need to think through certain features you desire in the storage bed itself. Lynch says the main thing to consider is access.
According to her, some of the questions you’ll want to ask yourself include: What type of access works well for this room? Are you able to access the storage on both sides? One side?
You’ll also need to think about the items you’d like to store within the bed, says Lynch. For example, do you need something specific to be able to fit within the bed?
How to care for a storage bed
To keep your storage bed in tip-top shape, you can vacuum out the storage compartments regularly to get rid of any dust and debris, check for any loose screws or bolts, and lubricate moving parts if you have a storage bed that uses hydraulics.
Lynch also suggests regularly taking stock of what you’re stashing in your storage bed and if it’s serving you.
“Be mindful of what is being stored and consider if this is the optimal solution,” she says. “Store things you need less frequently in the areas that are harder to reach and things you need more frequently at your fingertips.”
FAQs
What are the disadvantages of storage beds?
With all of its drawers and compartments, a storage bed can look a bit bulky in a space, especially if you have a small bedroom. The storage bed won’t be able to store large items, like luggage or heavy comforters, and it’s also higher than an average bed, which can make it more difficult to climb in.
Is it good to sleep on a storage bed?
“As long as you have a quality mattress, the storage bed shouldn’t affect your quality of sleep,” Lynch says.
What’s the difference between a captain’s bed and a mate’s bed?
Although they sound like nautical terms, these names denote how much storage you can expect in a storage bed. A captain’s bed will have more storage features while a mate’s bed has less storage, such as drawers only on one side.
