A new survey from Saatva, the Smarter Luxury Sleep Company, finds that Millennials are sleeping longer, and better, than any other generation.  

Saatva surveyed 2,000 Americans divided among Gen Z (1997-2012), Millennials (1981-1996), Gen X (1965-1980), and Boomers (1946-1964) to find out who sleeps best and why. Among the highlights:

“Younger people tend to report better sleep quality than older people. It’s a common topic that I see in my practice,” says Shantha Gowda, PsyD., a licensed clinical health psychologist and behavioral sleep medicine specialist based in San Francisco. She points out that Gen X is the “sandwich” generation that is raising young children while dealing with aging parents. “Gen X also has more of a ‘grind’ mentality when it comes to work,” Gowda says. “Younger Millennials and Gen Z are more likely to focus on work/life balance.” She notes that all of those stresses could contribute to Gen X’s sleep dissatisfaction.

What’s Keeping Americans Up at Night?

The survey also looked at the “sleep stealers” that are robbing Americans of their rest. 

Not surprisingly, back pain dominated the physical complaints for Gen X and Boomers, but 29% of Millennials and 15% of Gen Z also cited it as their top physical ailment. 

“Back pain does not discriminate. It affects all adults to a significant degree without giving credence to psychographics or demographics,” says chiropractor Chris Tomshack, CEO of HealthSource Chiropractic. “In fact, fully 50% of adults suffer from chronic or daily back pain, while 80% of adults will suffer a serious back pain event at some point in their life.”

Men, Women, and Couples

When it comes to sleep, the survey revealed some marked differences between the sexes. While more women than men say sleep is “very important” to them (67% vs. 58%), women are less likely than men to be satisfied with the quality of the sleep they are getting. Women also report that they struggle more than men with falling and staying asleep.

Different generations say they have tried—or abandoned—a variety of habits in an effort to improve their sleep.

All figures, unless otherwise stated, are from YouGov Plc. Total sample size was 2,017 adults. Fieldwork was undertaken between 8–12 April 2024. The survey was carried out online. The figures have been weighted and are representative of all US adults (aged 18+).

The DTC mattress company’s modern retail experience comes home to New York ahead of Presidents’ Day

Saatva has returned to New York to provide shoppers with a new take on Smarter Luxury Sleep. Saatva’s newest Viewing Room in Mahattan’s Flatiron District neighborhood pays homage to its first retail location, elegantly reimagined in a two-story space. The immersive 6,500-square-foot space located near the iconic Madison Square Park, was designed to be more than a standard mattress store. Saatva Flatiron is the ultimate destination for an integrated mattress exploration, education, and modern retail technology experience.

“We’re thrilled to return home and open a new location in one of Manhattan’s premier shopping districts,” said Saatva CEO Ron Rudzin about the brand’s new Flagship location. “An extension of our online presence, it’s another way to experience our commitment to delivering white-glove customer service and made-to-order, premium mattresses that don’t come in a box.”

A New Design Experience

Saatva Flatiron showcases the latest step in the company’s retail design journey. Saatva’s lower Manhattan flagship was conceptualized by Hines Collective and Sargenti Architects, an international architecture firm. Hines further integrates modern touches and emphasizes this new interpretation of Smarter Luxury Sleep. This perfectly complements Sargenti’s design and construction approach, which provides an elegant and sophisticated experience in one of New York’s most vibrant shopping areas. 

“One of the first elements you experience is the incredible architecture of the ceiling,” said Hines. With its undulating lines, the coved ceiling guides visitors through the store as other design features layer on and contribute to that flow. There are numerous ‘wow’ moments throughout the interior, like the central staircase joining the two beautifully outfitted floors and a 6–by–10–foot changing digital display wall that allows customers to experience a Saatva mattress in the setting of their choice. Like all Saatva Viewing Rooms, Saatva Flatiron is designed to be a relaxed, self-guided space where customers can use technology to interact with and learn about products at their own pace. 

From the moment a visitor enters the space, the Viewing Room aims to redefine the customer experience. With its aromatic fragrance, subdued color palette, warm lighting, sustainable flooring, and textured wall treatments, Saatva Flatiron offers an inviting respite from New York City’s hustle and bustle. Further into the space, silvery trees form a canopy under the ceiling’s gentle curves. Soft fabrics and floor-to-ceiling mirrors punctuate the walls throughout, creating a unified environment from start to finish. In keeping with Saatva’s “made in America” philosophy, interior materials and finishes, including the architectural lighting, were assembled in the U.S.A.

In addition to showcasing Saatva’s full lineup of made-to-order luxury mattresses—featuring innerspring, memory foam, latex, hybrid, adjustable air, youth, and crib options. Saatva’s suite of organic bedding products is also on display, including the new Organic Velvet Diamond quilt and the Organic Channel Cotton quilt, which are perfect for upgrading one’s sleep sanctuary. 

Cutting-Edge Technology

Thanks to a partnership with Samsung, the Flatiron Viewing Room is outfitted with state-of-the-art displays and the latest behavior-sensing technology to help customers discover, personalize, and build their ideal sleep experience. In addition to the digital  “hero” wall, composed of nine Samsung VM46T-U 46-inch Full HD Ultra-Narrow Bezel Video Wall Displays,  information kiosks at each bed display allow visitors to interact with the collection at their own pace, with knowledgeable Sleep Guides on hand to assist and answer questions.

As customers explore bedding, pillows, and other top-of-bed accessories, for example, an LED display embedded in the accessories wall changes to display pertinent product information. In the children’s bed area, kids can interact with the Flip, a 55-inch whiteboard with a touch screen for drawing.
