Your astrological sign can tell you a lot about yourself, from who your ideal romantic partner is to whether you’re more of a party person or a homebody. It can even give you some insights into why you sleep the way you do. Here, Griffin Damron, a Vedic astrologist, explains what your astrological sign says about how you sleep.
Aries (March 21-April 19)
Aries is “the most energized sign of the zodiac, always following their creative impulses,” says Damron. For that reason, you’re most likely to stay up late and wake up early. “You always want to be up at sunrise to get to all of these accomplishments that you want to make,” he says. “You also have no problem staying up late if your endeavors require that of you.” (Here’s how much sleep you really need, no matter what your astrological sign.)
Taurus (April 20-May 20)
“These guys love all the material pleasures in life,” Damron says. “They have the best eye for luxury.” That means you’re going to want the finest mattresses, highest thread count on sheets, the nicest pillows, and a big room to sleep in. “Once you’re in that kind of setting, you could sleep for hours on end,” he says.
Gemini (May 21-June 20)
You have the most unpredictable sleep schedule out of all the astrological signs—it’s hard to say when and where you’ll fall asleep. That’s because as a Gemini, you’re always on the move. “You like to engage in a lot of different hobbies and skills,” notes Damron. “Doing all these activities at once can overwhelm you to the point where you crash.” (If you need help winding down, here are 10 nighttime activities to try.)
Cancer (June 21-July 22)
Cancer is ruled by the moon—and your moods are often directly affected by its phases. In fact, it’s not uncommon for your mood to swing back and forth from happy to sad. That’s why “you are always going to sleep the best when you feel like you’re emotionally stable and secure,” explains Damron. “You’re going to want to have a comforting blanket that reminds you of childhood or a bunch of stuffed animals that you can cuddle with and that will provide emotional comfort.”
Leo (July 23-August 22)
You spend a lot of time resting and in relaxation mode, which makes sense given that the symbol of a Leo is the very regal lion. “Imagine a king that sits in the lap of luxury in his palace in a king-size bed lazing around, enjoying the day, and maybe ignoring whatever work he has to do,” says Damron. Like lions, you also like to take cat naps during the day.
Virgo (August 23-September 22)
“You are the most meticulous and the most nit-picky sign,” says Damron. “You’re all about creating organization in the material world.” What that means for your sleep style: “You won’t be able to sleep unless your room is in perfect order, your bed has been made perfectly, and everything is in its right place,” Damron says. (Here’s why non-Virgos should make their bed every morning too.)
Libra (September 23-October 22)
Libra’s symbol is the scale, which represents social and emotional balance. “You probably won’t be able to sleep if there’s any kind of disharmony in your social circle or you feel uncomfortable about anything you’ve done socially,” says Damron. “You’re the kind of person who will lie in bed and dwell on social situations that have gone wrong.” For that reason, you need to resolve conflicts before you’re able to sleep soundly. Libra is also the sign of partnership, so “you’re most likely to want to cuddle with somebody,” adds Damron. (Follow these mattress-buying tips for couples.)
Scorpio (October 23-November 21)
Scorpios are “all about confronting darkness and existential mysteries,” says Damron. You want to know the answers to the big questions, like why we’re here and what happens when we die. “Scorpio is the sign that’s most likely to stay up late into the night and brood over the darker questions of life,” he says. Because this astrological sign is ruled by Mars, Scorpios might not actually need as much sleep as others. (Kris Jenner is one famous Scorpio who runs on little sleep.)
Sagittarius (November 23-December 21)
“You love to travel and to expand your worldview,” says Damron. “You always want to be learning.” Because of that, Sagittarians probably won’t lay their heads in just one place. “You are the most likely to visit foreign countries, travel long distances, and live a very nomadic lifestyle,” he says. “You’re also most likely to sleep in a van or live in an RV, car, or different hostels because you’re always going to be on the move.” (These sleep tips for travelers will help you snooze wherever you are in the world.)
Capricorn (December 22-January 19)
Capricorns are “disciplined and responsible in order to manifest material abundance,” says Damron. The archetype for a Capricorn is a CEO, and for that reason, “you’re going to have the most structured sleeping schedule. You’re the kind of person who does their nightly routine, goes to bed at 8 on the dot, has an alarm clock set for 6 in the morning, and gets up right away to follow whatever your daily routine is.”
Aquarius (January 20-February 18)
“You are the most eccentric and unpredictable sign because it’s your mission to move society forward,” says Damron. “These are the people who want to be an example to others of how society should be.” Damron explains that those born under this sign are the most likely to try the latest sleep trends in an effort to learn what will help others sleep better—the more out there the trend, the better. Pisces (February 19-March 20)
Pisces is the last astrological sign. Whereas the first sign, Aries, represents coming into this world, Pisces are ready to go to sleep. “Pisces is the most dreamy sign,” says Damron. “You’re ready to go to sleep and be done with this world.” Damron adds that as a Pisces, you’re creative and imaginative—you’d spend all day in bed dreaming if you could. “You might sleep for 14 hours or more because you just love to be involved in the dream life.”
It turns out dreaming is good for you. Here’s how dreaming benefits your health.
