Everything You Need to Know About Mattress Delivery

Before purchasing a new mattress, it's important to know about mattress delivery options. Luxury brands often offer white glove service, which includes hand-delivering the mattress to the room of your choice, assembling the mattress and foundation, and taking away your old mattress or foundation. Doorstep delivery allows you to move the mattress to your desired room and set it up. Some mattresses come shipped in a box and delivered to your doorstep, but you're responsible for lugging the box inside and setting up the mattress.

While you’re researching new mattresses before making a purchase, one thing you want to check out is delivery. How does a particular mattress retailer get its product to your home? This article will explore everything you need to know about mattress delivery so you’re prepared when you receive your new bed.

Mattress delivery options

Mattress companies use different ways to deliver their products. The cost will range from free to hundreds of dollars. What the cost includes also varies. Here are the most commonly offered options.

Delivered to the room of your choice

Luxury mattress brands usually offer what they call white glove service. It involves delivering the mattress to the room of your choice, setting it up, and sometimes even removing your old mattress. Some companies offer white glove service as a premium or “diamond” level of delivery service.

Saatva, like some other luxury brands, offers free white glove delivery with every mattress. This includes hand-delivering your new mattress to the room of your choice, assembling the mattress and (if you purchase one) foundation, and taking away your old mattress and foundation or box spring if you select the “free mattress & foundation removal” at checkout—all at no extra charge!

Delivered to your doorstep

Doorstep delivery means the company delivers the mattress to your door. You decide whether it’s your front door, side door, or even your garage. It will be up to you to move the mattress to the room where you want it and set it up. Many mid-tier retail mattress stores and brands offer this basic bare-bones delivery service.

Delivered in a box

Some mattresses you buy from an online company come shipped in a box and delivered to your doorstep. Again, you’re responsible for lugging the box inside and setting up the mattress in your bedroom. It’s also up to you to remove and get rid of your old mattress and foundation. It’s important to note that off-gassing can occur when you take the mattress out of the box. The mattress will release chemicals into the air, so it may smell for a few days.

Preparing for delivery day

So you’ve been looking forward to enjoying a wonderful night of sleep on your new mattress. Now it’s almost delivery day! Here are a few tips for getting ready to receive your new mattress:

  • Keep your phone handy and voicemail box clear. This will let the delivery team be able to schedule your mattress delivery and, if they can’t reach you, leave a message.
  • Clear the path to your bedroom. Move anything out of the way that could get bumped or damaged between the door where the delivery team will bring the mattress inside. This includes removing decorations on walls or tables, such as picture frames, that could get bumped or broken during the delivery and setup of your new mattress.
  • Remove the bedding from your old mattress. Saatva’s white glove delivery includes the removal of your old mattress and foundation for free (if you’ve selected this option at checkout). Remove the sheets, bed skirts, and other bedding from the old mattress and foundation so the delivery team can easily remove them from your home.
  • Inspect your old mattress and foundation. If you requested removal, make sure your mattress and foundation are in good condition and aren’t stained or damaged.

FAQs

Do mattresses ship in a box?

Some online mattress companies ship their mattresses in a box. Saatva mattresses don’t come delivered in a box. There are a few innerspring mattresses that come in a box, but you should know that the durable steel coils used in an innerspring mattress get bent out of shape during the process of rolling up the mattress.

Do mattresses get delivered rolled up?

Some online mattresses, usually made of foam, are rolled up and stuffed into a box. They need time to inflate once they’re taken out of the packaging. They also need time to air out because vacuum sealing and wrapping a mattress in plastic concentrates odors and can lead to off-gassing—the term for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) leaking out of the foam used in mattresses and other upholstery materials and into the air you breathe. Common VOCs include formaldehyde, toluene, chlorofluourocarbons, benzene, trichloroethane, and perfluorocarbons.

How are new mattresses delivered?

Most online mattress companies ship their mattresses in a box. Once it’s delivered to your home, it’s up to you to lug it inside, set it up, and remove your old mattress and foundation. Saatva’s white glove delivery features a real delivery team in a truck, bringing your new mattress to the room of your choice, setting it up, and removing your old mattress and foundation if you requested removal at the time of checkout.
