If you’re the type of person who can fall asleep on a crowded subway, it might have something to do with your zodiac sign.
According to astrology, the character traits associated with your sign subconsciously influence how you think about and approach napping. For some, naps feel like restorative mini-vacations, and for others, a bit overindulgent.
“The moon, our mind and emotional guide, and Mercury, our nervous system’s buddy, play pivotal roles in how we rest,” says Olya Perkovic, astrologer and ayurvedic health counselor. If these celestial bodies are a bit off, you might find your sleep disturbed.”
We spoke with Perkovic and three other astrologers about which signs benefit from cat naps and who needs Friends reruns playing in the background while catching a quick (and delightful) afternoon snooze.
Ideal types of naps for zodiac signs
Aries (March 21-April 19)
Ambitious Aries are up at the crack of dawn but can quickly burn out if they lean into their propensity to go go go without recharging. This sign has difficulty sitting still, let alone taking a nap. However, unplugging can help these goal-getters tackle their endless to-do lists.
“A short but sweet 20-minute recovery nap can work wonders,” says Perkovic. “It’s the perfect way for Aries to keep that vibrant energy in check, ensuring they’re ready to tackle their next adventure with renewed zest.”
Taurus (April 20-May 20)
Your typical sheets simply won’t do for luxury-loving Taureans. Think satin pajamas, bamboo bedding, and a top-of-the-line mattress with all the bells and whistles to lull them to sleep.
It makes sense that longer naps appeal to these seekers of comfort and relaxation. Perkovic suggests a cozy wind-down routine and a soothing bath to make “every nap feel like a luxurious retreat.”
Gemini (May 21-June 20)
Social and creative, Geminis are full of ideas and are always up for new adventures and friendships. Prone to FOMO, they often overcommit their time and have difficulty slowing down but can fall asleep in the noisest of settings.
Sidhharrth S Kumaar, an astrologer and numerologist, suggests the twin sign take 10-minute split naps twice daily to “help balance their dual nature so they remain sharp and alert. Taken in a somewhat social setting with some background conversation, social naps fit their friendly and talkative inclinations.”
Cancer (June 21-July 22)
Cozy vibes only for this highly intuitive and sensitive sign. Attuned to their natural rhythms, Cancers might enjoy a hygge bedroom and incorporate nature sounds, soft sheets, and a lighthearted book of fiction into their long or short sleep routines.
As far as naps go, a “restorative 30-minute nap can help reset and maintain their natural comfort and peace, ensuring they remain in tune with their nurturing, restful nature,” says Perkovic.
Leo (July 23-August 22)
Best not to disturb a lion while they’re napping. Like Taureans, Leos enjoy long, luxe naps supported by a first-class sleeping environment. Sleep is a serious business for Leos—and they can become irritable if they don’t get enough.
A good daytime lion tamer is a 20-40 minute sun nap. “Taken in a comfortable and aesthetically beautiful environment, luxurious naps satisfy their taste for grandeur,” says Kumaar.
Virgo (August 23-September 22)
Analytical and detail-oriented Virgos are constantly thinking, which, at times, can be exhausting. They prioritize their health, so having a consistent sleep routine is a priority for them.
For these lovers of structure and order, Kumaar recommends 25-minute naps in a “neat, calm setting to fit their inclination for organization and cleanliness.”
Libra (September 23-October 22)
“Ruled by Venus, Libras’ vibrant lifestyle thrives on a busy schedule, making beauty naps especially beneficial,” says Perkovic. “These brief yet rejuvenating breaks help them stay balanced and energized.”
Scorpio (October 23-November 21)
Intense Scorpios like the dark and are the sign most likely to block out all signs of light with blackout curtains—and, side note, sleep naked, says Linda Shaw, astrologer.
What’s this mysterious sign’s nap style? “Long and deep,” says Kumaar. “Their nap time is for introspection and processing emotions.”
Sagittarius (November 23-December 21)
Travel-loving Saggitarians’ sleep schedules may be out of whack from visiting new places and not having a strict sleep routine. As a fire sign, their sleep can be disrupted by their boundless energy, so they need restorative naps to revive themselves for their next adventure.
Their biggest nap obstacle? FOMO. Their superpower? Being able to sleep whenever, wherever. “To match their zeal for life, Sagittarians value 10-20 minute fast and reviving adventure naps,” says Kumaar. And if they can swing it, catching a quick nap in nature lulls this tree-hugging sign to sleep.
Capricorn (December 22-January 19):
Capricorns have mastered the art of productivity and are known for their stellar work ethic. Therefore, they may view a nap as wasted time and have difficulty giving in to its many health benefits.
“These sea goats’ naps are strategic and structured, taken only to enhance their productivity,” says Tara Bennet, astrologer. They may need to book 10-minute snooze sessions into their planner to recharge their batteries.
Aquarius (January 20-February 18)
The sign racking up the most screen time goes to Aquarians who, like the Little Mermaid, like to be surrounded by gizmos and gadgets galore. Parting with their smartphones may be a tall order, so it’s best to listen to a soundscape on a meditation app to fall into a dreamy nap.
These water bearers are also unconventional nappers. “Aquarians will nap upside down if it might stimulate their imagination or just to see what it’s like,” says Bennet.
Pisces (February 19-March 20)
Imaginative Pisces gravitate toward peaceful sleep and have no trouble accessing it. A nap often feels like a session of daydreaming, meditation, or a spiritual practice—activities they deeply cherish,” says Perkovic.
For them, it’s more about seeking serenity and relaxation rather than a deep slumber. Kumaar suggests 40-minute healing naps, coupled with aromatherapy or calming music, to help this sign restore their “sensitive and intuitive self.”
FAQs
How many types of naps are there?
Did you know that there are several types of nap styles? Power naps are quick energy boosters, while cat naps clock in at 15 minutes for a shorter, mental refresh. And while all naps may seem like a luxury, luxury naps are their own sleep style—and, you guessed it, they’re long and indulgent.
According to proponents of coffee naps, you can have your coffee and have your nap too. Also known as “nap-a-lattes,” get yourself percolating by drinking a cup of coffee before a 20-minute sleep session to wake up alert and energized. Any nap between 1-3 pm is considered a mid-day nap which can help you recover from an afternoon slump.
What is the best type of nap?
Because you don’t access REM sleep during one, the power nap—also known as the “30-minute nap”—is the ideal nap style to feel refreshed rather than sleepier than you felt pre-nap time.
Set your alarm for no more than 30 minutes, and keep your paws off the snooze button. “True power naps are easier to wake up from and don’t come with post-nap grogginess,” says Lauri Leadley, founder and president at Valley Sleep Center. “It’s just a reboot.”
