5 Reasons to Choose a Saatva Memory Foam Mattress

/ September 1, 2020

When it comes to choosing a mattress, you've got plenty of options. One of the most popular mattress types of the moment is the memory foam mattress, thanks to the body-hugging feel it provides.

Is a memory foam mattress right for you—and how do you go about finding your ideal match? At Saatva, we happen to think our Loom & Leaf is the best memory foam mattress out there.

But don't just take our word for it. Here's a closer look at what makes Loom & Leaf the best foam mattress, as well as real Saatva mattress reviews from customers.

Why go with a memory foam mattress over other mattress types?

Memory foam has quite a few benefits that make it a good choice over other mattress types. These are the top three reasons to choose a memory foam mattress:

Memory foam mattresses relieve pressure points

One of the biggest benefits of a memory foam mattress is its ability to conform to your body, giving you much-needed pressure relief under shoulders and hips.

Memory foam mattresses protect your back

Because memory foam conforms to your body, it's able to help keep your spine in neutral alignment. This, in turn, helps prevent you from waking up with back pain.

Memory foam mattresses limit motion transfer

Do you or your partner move around a lot in your sleep? With a memory foam mattress, you won't have to worry about either of you being woken up in the middle of the night because the material helps absorb movement.

Memory foam vs. spring mattress: pros and cons

Of course, a memory foam mattress isn't right for everyone. For starters, if you prefer the responsiveness of a traditional innerspring mattress, then a memory foam mattress probably isn't right for you.

On the flip side, if you currently sleep on an innerspring mattress and hate how you can feel your partner moving during the night, then you might like the motion isolation memory foam provides.

Keep in mind that traditional memory foam sleeps hot since it warms and molds to your body. While fans of memory foam love how it contours, it can trap body heat.

Innerspring mattresses, on the other hand, allow for lots of airflow between coils. If you like the feel of memory foam but are a hot sleeper, look for a mattress that's infused with cooling gel or graphite so you don't overheat while you sleep.

Memory foam is also not the best mattress choice for heavy people. Rather, it's best suited to people under 200 pounds. Those weighing above 200 pounds will do better on an innerspring or hybrid mattress.

Our Best Memory Foam Mattress

Loom & Leaf Memory Foam

Premium memory foam, handcrafted in the U.S. with eco-friendly materials. Breathable organic cotton, cooling spinal gel, and layers of high-density support foam assure a cool, comfortable night's sleep.

Who has the best memory foam mattresses?

Have you decided that a memory foam mattress is right for you? Here's why we believe Loom & Leaf is the best memory foam mattress.

Loom & Leaf is handcrafted with premium memory foam

The rule of thumb is the higher the foam density (weight per cubic foot), the higher the quality of the mattress. Premium memory foam has a foam density of 4 to 5 pounds per cubic foot.

Loom & Leaf is made with a 2.5-inch layer of 5-lb. memory foam that contours to your body and relieves pressure and a 2-inch layer of 4-lb. convoluted (wavy) memory foam infused with cooling gel.

Bed in a box mattresses, on the other hand, are made with lower-density foam so they can be squeezed into a box. While they're cost-effective and convenient, the lower-density foam they're made from is not as durable as premium memory foam.

Loom & Leaf is infused with cooling gel

Traditional memory foam tends to sleep hot—but newer types of memory foam often contain cooling materials that are designed to absorb and conduct heat away from your body. Cooling materials can either be mixed into the foam (infused) or applied as a layer on the surface (laminated).

Loom & Leaf has a proprietary Spinal Zone Gel layer that helps you sleep cool. The mattress is also covered in breathable organic cotton.

Loom & Leaf is handcrafted with high-quality non-toxic materials.

Loom & Leaf is free of toxic chemicals

Memory foam, which is made from polyurethane, a petroleum derivative, can sometimes give off a chemical smell—a process known as off-gassing. That's the term for what happens when volatile organic compounds (VOCs) leak out of mattress foams into the air you breathe.

This tends to happen with bed in a box mattresses, which are vacuum-sealed, as this concentrates odors. Off-gassing contributes to indoor air pollution and may be irritating to people with chemical sensitivities or breathing issues.

Loom & Leaf is made with non-toxic, eco-friendly foams that will never off-gas in your home. Our foams are CertiPUR-US®-certified, which means they are guaranteed to be odorless and free of harmful chemicals. CertiPUR-US®-certified foams are also guaranteed to be free of ozone depleters; PBDEs, TDCPP, and TCEP flame retardants; mercury, lead, and other heavy metals; formaldehyde; and phthalates.

Loom & Leaf is available in two firmness options

Many bed in a box brands sell mattresses are available in a "universal" firmness, which is typically a medium firmness. While medium firm mattresses suit many sleepers, some people prefer a softer mattress, and others like their bed to be on the firmer side. This often has to do with your sleep position—side sleepers do best on a soft sleep surface, while stomach sleepers need a firmer mattress to help keep their spines aligned.

Loom & Leaf comes in two firmnesses: relaxed firm and firm. Relaxed firm is our flagship comfort level. It offers the ideal combination of plush comfort and contouring support and provides healthy spinal alignment for back, side, or stomach sleepers. It's also ideal for couples with different comfort preferences.

Firm, meanwhile, delivers balanced support for stomach sleepers, or anyone who prefers the feel of a very firm mattress. It features firmer foam so you'll feel like you're lying on top of the mattress rather than sinking into it.

Loom & Leaf has added lumbar support

Lumbar support is crucial when in a mattress, especially if you experience pain in your back, shoulders, or hips while you sleep. Adequate lumbar support assures that hips won't sink too deeply and the spine stays in neutral alignment, which means you won't wake up sore or stiff. A lot of memory foam mattresses don't have additional lumbar support.

Loom & Leaf does have added lumbar support. A higher concentration of gel in the center third of the mattress ensures maximum spinal support.

You don't have to take our word for it when we say our memory foam mattress is better than the rest—the proof is in the glowing customer reviews.

Here's what customers have to say about Loom & Leaf:

"No pain! Zero backaches"

"We purchased the Loom & Leaf relaxed firm queen foam mattress. I am in my 50s and haven't had a great night's sleep since my 20s in my waterbed. Make no mistake, this isn't the same as a waterbed in your 20s but I used to wake up every night several times a night, in pain in my back, hips, shoulders, knees, and just about everywhere else. We purchased this mattress (relaxed firm) and the customer service and delivery were spectacular! The first night I didn't sleep well but had no pain, the bed seemed hard and had not yet broken in; most noticeable though, no pain. By the end of the first week, I was sleeping solidly on average 5-6 hours (might not seem like much to others but for me, that's a full night's sleep!). Sometimes I even get 6-8 hours now. Most importantly, NO PAIN! ZERO backaches. I've had numerous surgeries (two on my spine) and NOTHING hurt sleeping in this bed." (Read the full review.)

"No sweating through the night"

"We received our new Loom & Leaf mattress way sooner than expected and slept on it the very first night. OMG—it is awesome. Even my pessimistic husband loved it. No morning aches or pains, no sweating through the night on a hot memory foam mattress. This is the best bed ever!" (Read the full review.)

"My back is feeling much better"

"We got our Loom & Leaf mattress one week ago. My low back has been hurting for months and I could not spend an entire night in bed. Since getting the new mattress I am now sleeping all night in my bed and my back is feeling much better. The lumbar area of the Loom & Leaf has helped immensely. I highly recommend this mattress!" "From the first night, it was absolute heaven"

I bought a Loom & Leaf mattress in October of 2016. From the first night, it was absolute heaven. I look forward to going to bed! I travel a lot and stay in nice hotels but never like a bed as much as my Loom & Leaf. I will never purchase a different brand. I have the relaxed firm." (Read the full review.)
