There’s nothing more frustrating than buying a set of bed sheets just to find out they don’t fit your mattress. Sheet size dimensions are one of the most important factors to consider when buying a new set of sheets. This guide to bed sheet sizes (which includes a handy chart) will make it easy for you to find the right sheet dimensions for your bed.
Bed sheet sizes chart
A good rule of thumb is that the sheets you buy should be at least the same size as your mattress—and in many cases (especially for flat sheets), wider and longer.
We’ve put together a chart of the most common sheet size dimensions offered at Saatva, from crib all the way to California king. Note that sheet dimensions often vary by retailer.

Crib sheet dimensions
Crib-size sheets are usually relatively thin and are always fitted sheets since it’s not practical for a baby to sleep on flat sheets.
A typical crib mattress size is 28 inches wide by 52 inches long. The fitted sheet size of a crib mattress should have the same dimensions. Saatva’s fitted sheet for
Our dual-sided crib mattress for little ones
measures 28 inches by 52 inches.
Twin sheet dimensions
Not counting the crib, a twin mattress is the smallest mattress size that fits both adults and children. Once your child outgrows their crib, their twin bed can easily serve them from toddlerhood to adulthood.
The size of a twin mattress is 38 inches wide by 75 inches long. Saatva’s fitted twin sheets are 39 inches by 75 inches and our twin flat sheets are 72 inches by 110 inches.
Duvet measurements can vary depending on the material. Saatva’s twin/twin XL comforters and duvet covers measure 68 inches by 90 inches.
Twin XL sheet dimensions
Twin XL mattresses are less common but are a perfect solution for taller teens and adults living on their own in tight spaces.
These mattresses are the same width as a twin mattress but are 5 inches longer and often used in college dorms.
Keep in mind that because of the difference in length, twin-size sheets won’t fit twin XL mattresses—so if your child has outgrown their twin mattress, they’ve also outgrown their sheets. Saatva’s fitted twin XL sheets are 39 inches by 80 inches, while our twin XL flat sheet is 72 inches by 114 inches.
You can likely get away with using the same comforter and duvet cover size as you would for a twin mattress. Saatva’s twin/twin XL comforters and duvet covers measure 68 inches by 90 inches.
Full sheet dimensions
Full-size mattresses (also called double mattresses) are the same length as a twin bed but 16 inches wider. They’re perfect for an adult who wants more personal space—but they can also sleep a couple, especially if they don’t have a big enough bedroom for a queen-size bed. They’re also popular in guest rooms.
The size of a full mattress is 54 inches wide by 75 inches long. Saatva’s fitted full sheets also measure 54 inches by 75 inches, while our flat sheets for full beds are 92 inches by 110 inches.
Our full/queen comforters and duvet covers, meanwhile, measure 88 inches by 92 inches.
Queen sheet dimensions
Queen-size mattresses are the most popular mattress size. They sleep two people comfortably and are also great for single sleepers who are lucky enough to have enough space in their bedrooms.
When you’re ready to upgrade to a queen-size bed, pay attention to sheet sizes so that you’re not accidentally buying full-size sheets.
The size of a queen-size mattress is 60 inches wide by 80 inches long. Fitted sheets will be the same size. Saatva’s fitted queen sheets also measure 60 inches by 80 inches, while our flat sheets for queen beds are 96 inches by 114 inches.
You can likely get away with using the same comforter and duvet cover size as you would for a full mattress. Saatva’s full/queen comforters and duvet covers measure 88 inches by 92 inches.
King sheet dimensions
King-size mattresses are 76 inches wide by 80 inches long, which is the perfect size if your family now includes children and pets who like to snuggle up with you on Sunday mornings.
King-size fitted sheets will be the same size as the mattress, while flat sheets will be a little larger. Saatva’s fitted king sheets measure 76 inches by 80 inches, while our flat sheets for king beds measure 114 inches by 114 inches.
Saatva’s king/California king comforters and duvet covers, meanwhile, measure 106 inches by 92 inches.
California king sheet dimensions
A California king mattress has slightly different dimensions than a standard king. At 72 inches wide by 84 inches long, it’s slightly narrower than the standard king but is 4 inches longer. It’s perfect for taller couples who are willing to sacrifice 4 inches of width for the privilege of not having their toes hang off the mattress at night.
Make sure the sheets that you buy are the right size. King-size sheets won’t fit on a California king bed. Saatva’s fitted California king sheets measure the same size as the mattress (72 inches by 84 inches), while our flat sheets for California king beds measure 108 inches by 114 inches.
You can likely get away with using the same comforter and duvet cover size as you would for a king mattress. Saatva’s king/California king comforters and duvet covers measure 106 inches by 92 inches.
Fitted sheet pocket depth
It’s not enough to know the width and length of your mattress. You also need to consider its height to make sure your fitted sheet is deep enough and won’t slip off the edges of your mattress at night.
A properly sized fitted sheet should cover the sides of the mattress completely and tuck underneath it. For that reason, it’s best to choose sheets that are 1 to 2 inches deeper than the height of your mattress.
Keep in mind that standard fitted sheets generally fit mattresses 7 to 12 inches thick, which is also the typical height range for most mattresses. If your mattress is thicker than this, you’ll need to pay special attention when choosing fitted sheets to make sure they’re big enough.
Here are the three available pocket depths:
- Standard pocket: 7- to 12-inch mattresses
- Deep pocket: 13- to 17-inch mattresses
- Extra-deep pocket: 18- to 25-inch mattresses
Saatva’s fitted sheets have deep pockets to fit mattresses up to 16 inches high.

FAQs
Are full and queen sheets the same size?
Full- and queen-size mattresses aren’t the same size, so their sheets aren’t the same size either. A queen-size mattress is 7 inches longer and 5 inches wider than a full bed, so queen-size sheets will be larger.
What are the sizes of fitted bed sheets?
Fitted bed sheet sizes vary according to the size of the mattress and should be at least the same as the mattress. Here are the fitted sheet sizes offered by Saatva:
- Crib fitted sheet: 28 inches by 52 inches
- Twin fitted sheet: 39 inches by 75 inches
- Twin XL fitted sheet: 39 inches by 80 inches
- Full fitted sheet: 54 inches by 75 inches
- Queen fitted sheet: 60 inches by 80 inches
- King fitted sheet: 76 inches by 80 inches
- California king fitted sheet: 72 inches by 84 inches
Why does my fitted sheet keep slipping off?
The most likely reason your fitted sheet keeps sliding off is that it’s not deep enough to accommodate the height of your mattress. The standard fitted sheet can accommodate a mattress height between 7 and 12 inches. If your mattress is thicker than that, then you’ll need to get fitted sheets with deeper pockets.
Where do you get bed sheets for non-standard mattress sizes?
If you have a special mattress size, finding sheets for it might not be so straightforward. If your mattress is extra thick, make sure you get fitted sheets that are labeled “deep” or “extra deep.” If you have a split king mattress, you might get away with getting two twin XL sheets (pay attention to the depth, though). But a split-top mattress requires special sheets. The good news, though, is that as these mattress types have become more popular lately, it’s easier now to find appropriate sheets for them.
