FAQsFrequently asked questions
Duvet insert is a term sometimes used interchangeably with comforter.
Traditional comforters (ones meant to be used alone without a duvet cover) and quilts are typically thinner. Duvet inserts and comforters that are designed to to be paired with a duvet cover are typically fluffier than because they are filled with down alternative fibers or some other lightweight fill.Saatva comforters can be used on their own, but we recommend using them like duvet inserts inside our duvet covers to keep them cleaner and more protected in between washes while giving the option of changing up your bed look without changing out your entire comforter.
The terms “comforter” and “duvet” (also known as “duvet insert”) are sometimes used interchangeably. Traditionally, a comforter is meant to be used on its own and doesn’t require a cover. It can either have a decorative print or a solid color.
In contrast, a duvet (AKA duvet insert) is designed to be used inside a duvet cover which you can wash and switch out regularly. Duvets are also typically fluffier than traditional comforters and quilts because they are filled with down alternative or some other lightweight fill.

Saatva comforters are actually a hybrid of both. Like a comforter, they can be used on their own without a duvet because they're super soft and machine washable. Unlike a traditional comforter, they have the cloud-like softness and lightweight breathability of a duvet.
We recommend using one of our Saatva comforters as a duvet insert inside our duvet covers to give you more versatility and ease when laundry day comes around.
Down comforters are filled with down, the soft undercoating of ducks or geese. They offer superior insulation without being heavy or stuffy. Down comforters are usually more expensive than down alternative.
Down alternative comforters use synthetic materials to mimic the feel of down. They're a great budget-friendly, vegan alternative for those who don't want to use real down bedding.
Machine wash on its own in cold water on a gentle cycle. Do not bleach. Tumble dry low and remove promptly. Mild, organic detergents work best.
Duvet covers typically have fabric loops on each corner to tie and anchor the corners of the duvet insert to keep it from bunching.
Follow these easy steps to insert your duvet insert into your duvet cover:
1. Turn the duvet cover inside out and lay it flat on your mattress, with the opening at the foot of the bed.
2. Lay the comforter/duvet insert on top of the duvet cover.
3. Tie the ends of the duvet insert to the corresponding corner loops of the duvet cover.
4. Starting at the head of the bed, roll both the duvet cover and comforter/duvet insert together like a burrito toward the foot of the bed.
5. Once at the end, invert the duvet cover opening around the ends of both sides of the “burrito” you just rolled.
6. Zip the duvet cover closed.
7. Unroll the “burrito” back up toward the head of the bed and fluff as needed.
Yes, down comforters are very breathable and can be used for all seasons. Opt for our Lightweight Down Comforter during warmer months or if you tend to sleep hot.
High quality down comforters should have little to no shedding or poking through of down and feathers.
Saatva down comforters are designed with a down-proof, 100% cotton shell in a 400 thread count to prevent the down and feather fill from poking through the fabric.
Consider your preference for warmth and the climate you live in. If you tend to sleep hot or live in a hotter climate, choose a lightweight comforter that keeps you warm but with less fill weight. If you tend always feel cold or live in a colder climate, a heavyweight comforter will feel the coziest.
Looking for something that keeps you comfortable year round? Our All-Year option is the perfect in-between fill weight for most sleepers.
Down is naturally hypoallergenic, but to ensure that our down-filled bedding products are suitable even to sensitive sleepers, our down and feathers are thoroughly washed and sanitized before filling to further remove any lingering allergens.
Our 100% sateen cotton shell is down-proof, with a high thread count for a silky-soft feel and secure fill.
Fill power refers to the volume per one ounce of down. Higher fill power means better insulation and loft retention.
The Responsible Down Standard (RDS) is a voluntary standard that incentivizes the down and feather industry to treat ducks and geese more humanely and rewards organizations leading the way. The standard also gives companies and consumers a way to know more about the origin of materials in the products they buy.
Down and feathers that hold the RDS certification have been audited by a professional, third-party certification body at each stage in the supply chain starting at the farm.
