Frequently asked questions
Finding the right support base for your mattress really comes down to personal preference. Here’s a rundown of the options:
- Mattress foundation + frame
A foundation (sometimes still referred to as a box spring) is a rectangular box base that supports your mattress and raises it off the floor to a comfortable height. It can be set on a compatible metal frame as a minimal option, or placed in an open-cavity bed frame with a headboard for more of a style statement.
- Adjustable bed base
An adjustable base has a motor that allows you to customize the position of your mattress by either elevating or lowering the head and feet. They’re designed to take the place of a foundation, so there’s no need for a separate foundation if you go with an adjustable base. Our Lineal adjustable base is compatible with most styles of open-cavity bed frames and our Santorini, Porto, and Copenhagen platform beds.
-Platform bed frames
Platform beds are designed to be used without a foundation. The mattress rests directly on top of the platform, which can be either a solid surface or one made with slats.Note that if you have a memory foam (like our Loom & Leaf) or a double-sided/flippable mattress (like our Zenhaven), our Saatva warranties will only remain valid when it’s placed on a platform bed that has slats spaced less than 4" apart and a center support for queen and larger sizes.
Placing your mattress on top of a supportive mattress base like a mattress foundation or platform bed raises your sleep surface to an adequate height, making it easier to get in and out of bed and also reducing contact with allergens from the floor like dust and mold. Perhaps more importantly, having a good bed base ensures that your mattress provides you with its most optimal support.
Another good reason to have an adequate bed base is your mattress warranty. Some warranties specify that the mattress has to be used on either a foundation, box spring, or a platform bed base for the warranty to remain valid. Check out our warranties page for more details about each mattress warranty.
Our Lineal adjustable base is compatible with most styles of open-cavity bed frames and our Santorini, Porto, and Copenhagen platform beds.
Some people use what's called a bunkie board under their mattress to give it additional support. This a thin piece of material, often plywood or particleboard, that can be used with any type of bed setup, whether it's an old box spring, foundation, or a slatted platform bed frame. You don't need to add a plywood support on our Saatva mattress foundation as it already provides the optimal support your mattress needs.
You can put your mattress directly on the floor, although that can create other issues with allergens, dust, and mold. This might also make your mattress too low to the ground, making it more difficult to get in and out of bed, particularly if you have any mobility issues.
- You can use your existing box spring or foundation if:
- You purchased your box spring or foundation within the last 7 years.
- Your existing box spring or foundation is in good condition and provides sturdy center support.
- You don't mind not having a matching foundation.
- A solid, durable surface. If your platform has a slatted support system, make sure the slats are spaced less than 4" apart. If they're not, you can add a 1/2" thick piece of plywood to place on top. This extra layer of support is needed because Saatva mattresses are heavier due to their premium quality materials.
- A proper center support. A proper center support means you must have a center leg in the middle of your platform bed frame.
Adjustable bases, such as Lineal, offer a variety of health benefits, including back pain relief, soothing of sore muscles, and helping to reduce the symptoms of acid reflux and snoring.Adjustable bases also give you the flexibility to find your ideal position for watching TV, reading, or working in bed.
With Lineal you can:
- Elevate head and feet for weightless support
- Enjoy wave, head, or leg massage
- Underbed illumination lights your path at night
- Compatible with most bed frames including slatted platform beds.
All of our non-platform bed frames are compatible with our 4.75" to 5" foundations. We do not recommend pairing any of our bed frames with a foundation taller than 5", as a taller foundation will be visible above the side rails.
Our platform beds do not require a foundation.
No. The Lineal takes the place of a foundation or box spring to give your mattress the support it needs. It can be adjusted to your height preference, from 14 inches to 18 inches.
Our Lineal adjustable base is compatible with all Saatva bed frames except for the Sydney solid platform bed frame.
It's also compatible with most other bed frames. Contact the manufacturer of your non-Saatva bed frame to make sure it's compatible with an adjustable base. If you currently have a custom size bed frame, check the Lineal dimensions to make sure that it will fit inside the frame.
